check the neutral safty switch on the trany some times the plug falls off when they are old
also can you try to jump it from the starter relay if it cranks you may need to replace the ignition switch
i just started having trouble with mine looking to replace it with a new set "ignition and door lock matched set"

are you talking about the ignition switch where the keys go in or the starter solenoid under the hood? i found a set of wires under the column but i have no clue what they or if they connect to anything. it runs up toward the steering wheel, the colors are yellow-blue and light blue. i think.

First, DO you have a shop manual? If not GET one, the best money you'l ever spend, and I do not mean Haynes, Chilton, I mean a Chrysler factory manual. You can buy reprints both paper and CD on the www and ebay, and usually at car shows there's some "old guy" with a ton of them for sale.
Depending, you MAY have the dreaded, the awful "seat belt interlock." I don't have accurate diagrams to easily post, but my 74 Dodge manual shows you should have one on the cowl, left side. There should be a reset button sticking out. This relay should have two "yellowish" IE yellow, and a yellow/ tracer wires. Hook those together and never worry about the seat belt interlock again

Next your starter relay, and neutral safety switch. You should have a starter relay under the hook similar to this:
Start with the two push on terminals the top two in the photo. One of these should be "hot" when you twist the key to start. The other should be ground when the transmission is in park or neutral. Hook your test light and have a helper twist the key. Probe them without removing the wires. If BOTH show hot when you twist the key, this means the neutral safety switch is not working, is out of adjustment, or the harness is not making contact.
If this happens, remove either wire, and probe the two wires to find out which one is hot when the key is in "start." PUT THIS wire back on the relay. Temporarily clip the remaining push on terminal to ground and see if the car cranks using the key. BE CAREFUL as it can now crank in any gear
If this causes the starter to operate, check out the nss, the wiring to it, and the linkage adjustment
If NOT try using a screwdriver to jumper across the two large exposed terminals on the relay. IF this causes the starter to operate, and you have done the first checks, the relay is bad.
IF the starter does NOT crank, try jumpering across the two terminals at the starter. If it cranks, you either have a start relay problem, or the wire between the relay and starter is bad.
IF the starter does NOT crank this way, check the main battery cables, and the battery itself. You should have a minimum of 10.5V when the starter is in operation.
Pay attention to any clicks, thuds, or buzzing noises you hear.
