Need help!! 440 BIG BLOCK!!!

Well I just bought a salvage yard 440 big block, can't wait to start working on it, but I need to know how to make cheap power, I'm 18 years old I need cheap power right now, I can't afford a stroker kit. But I can afford a new cam and lifters and things like that. Also what do I need to know about this engine and how do I know where it has come from. The old owner, which is today's owners father, hid the engine under a bunch of things in a back of a old Chevy bed, it had sentimental value to him. So that's why I'm wandering where this thing has come from. Please help!!!

Does it turn over and what are the numbers stamped on the pad next to the distributor? Get your scraper out and let us know.:)

You want cheap power, you've got it. Even a stock rebuild your sporting 480 ft/lbs torque. http://www.lhmopars.com/engines.htm

See what you've got, one step at a time, don't go tearing apart just to look inside. Let us guide you as there is a lot of information to gather while it's together and if disassembly is in order, doing it slowly while inspecting and measuring can save headaches and help answer where to spend money.

I haven't even picked it up from the salvage yard yetC it's back ina muddy area, waiting for it to dry up before I go get it. And itll be a while before I ever think about cranking it over thank you guys though!!

If you don't know if it's free it better be cheap!

What do you meen by that?

Iowan 10-07-2016 10:59 AM

Does it turn over or is it stuck?

Dakotaguy03 10-07-2016 01:52 PM

It'll be a long time before it fires, don't have a truck to put it in

TVLynn 10-07-2016 02:56 PM

What they are saying is that if it is rusted solid It could be a boat anchor

Dakotaguy03 10-07-2016 06:34 PM

Well all engines can be rebuilt, I'm gonna be boaring this engine 20 or 30 over. This engine will get rebuilt, I'm determined. Not a boat anchor lol.

Dakotaguy03 10-10-2016 07:46 AM

I think my biggest problem is hauling a big block in my dodge Dakota lol

Dakotaguy03 10-11-2016 09:49 AM

3688830-440, that's on the side
Of the block, more numbers tonight

RacerHog 10-11-2016 02:53 PM

Dakotaguy03 10-11-2016 08:08 PM

Thank you guys!

Dakotaguy03 10-11-2016 08:10 PM

It cranks and I'm pretty darn excited being an 18 year old starting a project I've always wanted to do. If you guys have any tips. Anything that will help me, please say something

RacerHog 10-12-2016 06:00 AM

1. You need to set more for the intended use, other that just I need more power... We all like that.... :)

2. You need to set a budget that you can afford. Or Pencil together the parts and machine work needed to accomplish the goal of the build and budget accordingly..

3. Understand that you might get a curve ball somewhere in their...

Just My 2 Cent.... Keep us posted ..... Hummmm I was 18 once.... Started working on junk when I was 13yr old. Replaced a Starter in a Old Chevy.. My Buddys called me "Smokie Stratton" of Lawnmowers for there Mini-Bikes... Auwww, The good old days... lol

Dakotaguy03 10-12-2016 09:59 AM

Well it's gonna got in a 1980s ram, has to still be a streetable truck and a reliable engine

Iowan 10-12-2016 01:06 PM

Have fun and get er done!

Really? You don't want your building?

Dakotaguy03 10-13-2016 07:56 PM

Well I don't exactly have money for a truck, so 2wd or 4wd is the least of my worrys

Dakotaguy03 10-13-2016 08:05 PM

Plus I'm a senior in high school working a part time job, so this ain't gonna be a fast build, I'm way more worried on the engine then a truck I'll be buying a long time from now. I have a whole bunch of highperformance parts from my uncle cause he's doing a 440 build for his super bee and he has parts that he didn't need, including a brand new comp cam

Iowan 10-14-2016 01:03 PM

His left over parts could help you considerably.:)
Good luck with your project.

Coronet 500 10-14-2016 03:05 PM

Ooooo.... what camshaft?

TVLynn 10-14-2016 05:29 PM

I would plan on going .030 over

Dakotaguy03 10-16-2016 07:32 PM
