interchangeable parts?

Yes, I believe so. I'm actually trying to figure out which is which? The engine serial numbers are as follows:
LM318XLX-767 AND LM318BXRX-767

The "L" and "R" are supposed to denote shaft rotation. I'm not sure how that relates to my velvet drive transmissions yet. Can I tell the rotation of the engine by looking at the front and which direction the pulleys are going? I can't see the flywheel or starter rotation currently. I've read that the X is a racing motor but also potentially warranty motors. Warranty might make sense since the boat is a 1972 and the motors are 1983s.

I'm just doing as much research as possible to learn about them. I'm in the process of buying two reman motors from S+J in Spokane, WA. Does anyone know what the date range is for interchangeable parts for my 83?

thanks!
