Wink PERPLEXED

Hello I recently bought a 1970 plymouth roadrunner 440 6 pac, I had one when I was much younger and I did not treat her welll and always wanted another - be carefull what you wish for . When I bought the car it started but was running rough - the story is it sat for many years. I got home and started to figure thins out . The bottom line is the distributor plug wires are correct but the cylinders they go to are not correct yet it starts and runs rough?? - When i wire the cylinders correctly with the cap it wont start?? I WOULD TOTALY APPRECIATE ANY THOUGHT

It’s possible that the distributor is not in time, meaning that you should pull the distributor and advance or retard the drive one tooth on the cam as needed. It’s possible that the damper has slipped and isn’t showing true top dead center for number one, in that case the damper needs to be replaced.
I suspect that the distributor wasn’t installed correctly and it was adjusted for by moving number one on the cap.

Thank you for your response, I thought a Mopar distributor could only go in 1 or 2 ways as 180 degrees the other way ? how would I move the cam 1 tooth ? THANK YOU

Under the distributor there is a drive that turns because of the cam it also turns the oil pump. It has the slot that the distributor uses to turn but if the drive is installed incorrectly say maybe a tooth of it will not let the distributor be in the proper position. Sometimes when assembling the engine it might be necessary to set the drive in with the distributor a couple times to get it in the correct position.
You can pull the drive out with a pick. The problem comes when you need to aline the drive with the distributor and the cam and the oil pump drive…

I don’t know if I explained it correctly but where the drive sits on the cam effects where the distributor is in the firing order so the best way is to get everything set to #1 on the firing order that’s crank and then everything else.
