Alternator issue

A friend of mine has a 2006 PT Cruiser convertible that he says keeps burning up the diodes in the alternator. It sounds to me like an overcharge situation, he thinks there is a short in the alternator wiring harness. I don't have any more information than that, but have read that some have issues with the wiring harness between the alternator and PCM and also that the regulator and/or PCM could be bad. Any suggestions or comments?
