NHRA 4 Wide Nationals

Drivers buzzing about upcoming Four-Wide Nationals
Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Perhaps NHRA President Tom Compton said it best at the official announcement Jan. 21, when he told everyone in attendance, “Once again, the NHRA is making history at zMax Dragway. It’s certainly going to be spectacular to see.”
Compton was making reference to the new format that he, alongside Speedway Motorsports Chairman Bruton Smith, announced for the inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals March 25-28 at the "Bellagio of dragstrips." For the first time in NHRA history, all four Full Throttle classes will race four-wide for all qualifying sessions and eliminations.
The announcement created a buzz like never before among NHRA drivers, who were quick to respond with excitement and anticipation for what promises to be a landmark event.
"We've got to grow," said 14-time NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Funny Car world champion John Force. "Like Obama says, we've got to have change.
"It’s going to be exciting. You're talking over 30,000 horsepower at one time. You're talking over 1,200 mph out there on that racetrack.”

Force participated in the first modern-day, four-wide exhibition race at the second annual NHRA Carolinas Nationals last September at zMax Dragway. Mike Neff, Force’s teammate, won the exhibition, but it was Force who couldn’t contain himself in the media center after the race.
"Let me tell you, I embarrassed myself at the press conference,” Force continued. “We came right back in to talk about what had taken place. When I drove this four-lane race, I ran in here, and I was like Tom Cruise on Oprah, jumping up and down, screaming. Everyone said, 'He went nuts,' because it was that exciting and thrilling."
Fellow Funny Car competitor and 2003 Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil champion Tim Wilkerson also participated in the four-wide exhibition and echoes Force’s excitement looking ahead to the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals.
“The whole thing was a gigantic hit with the fans, and it was fun to be a part of it,” Wilkerson said. “Side-by-side Funny Car racing is pretty impressive on any track, but going four-wide just doubles everything up, and it's kind of hard to believe. Maybe somebody ought to talk to Doublemint gum about this. You know the old slogan, ‘Double your pleasure; double your fun.’ This is going to be a pretty historic deal, and it's just another example of how innovative Bruton Smith is when it comes to promoting the sport.

Round 1 Eliminations

Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 1
CONCORD, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals:

W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

(1) Ashley Force Hood (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.114 4.075 294.31
(2) Cruz Pedregon (Snap-On Solara) 0.064 4.258 297.81
(3) Del Worsham (Al-Anabi Racing Solara) 0.079 4.287 293.86
(4) Bob Gilbertson (Rinnai Tankless Water Heate 0.158 4.931 184.6712:14 p.m.

Weather conditions: air temperature 58 degrees, relative humidity 66 percent, barometer 29.30 inches, adjusted altitude 1,198 feet, track temperature 66 degrees.

As was the case with the Top Fuel cars, the left pair of lanes seem to be preferred and Lane 2 was chosen by three out of four with the first pick in their foursome. Force Hood made good runs in the first and last qualifying session, Worsham's two good runs came yesterday. Both Gilbertson and Pedregon had just one good run during qualifying.
Force Hood was the clear winner here, with Worsham and Pedregon in a close race for second. Both drivers had to pedal early in their run, got there ahead of Worsham to advance.

(1) Jack Beckman (Valvoline/MTS Charger) 0.081 4.068 312.06
(2) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.056 4.096 311.99
(3) Tony Pedregon (Quaker State Impala) 0.088 4.123 308.07
(4) Bob Tasca III (Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustan 0.071 4.151 304.25

This foursome is probably the toughest of the four this round, all four cars with a shot at winning.
As expected, it was a four-car race all the way down, the best race of the day so far. Beckman got there first, Force right on his heels because of a better reaction time.

Finish Order & Margins:
1. Jack Beckman was 0.0036 sec./about 20 inches ahead
2. John Force, who was 0.059 sec./about 27 feet ahead
3. Tony Pedregon, who was 0.011 sec./about 5 feet ahead
4. Bob Tasca III

(1) Ron Capps (NAPA Auto Parts Charger) 0.089 4.032 313.80
(2) Tim Wilkerson (Levi, Ray & Shoup Mustang) 0.088 4.079 299.40
(3) Melanie Troxel (In-N-Out Burger Charger) 0.084 4.129 305.49
(4) Jeff Diehl (Rimz One Monte Carlo) 0.158 8.100 83.47

Diehl's crew managed to get his car back together for today, but he was a huge underdog ion this foursome.
Diehl's car shook and smoked the tires early, but the other three were in the race most of the way.

Finish Order & Margins:

1. Ron Capps was 0.0467 sec./about 21 feet ahead
2. Tim Wilkerson, who was 0.046 sec./about 21 feet ahead
3. Melanie Troxel, who was 4.045 sec./more than 100 feet ahead
4. Jeff Diehl

Capps and Wilkerson will match up with Beckman and Force, Capps will have lane choice, then Beckman, then Wilkerson.

(1) Matt Hagan (DieHard Charger) 0.156 4.040 312.42
(2) Paul Lee (Jim Dunn/Canidae/Lucas Oil Impala 0.101 4.327 296.50
(3) Jeff Arend (DHL Solara) 0.081 NT-No Timing Block
(4) Robert Hight (AAA of So. Cal Mustang) 0.104 DQ-Centerline Last foursome.

And the underdogs advance! Hight's car started shaking the tires, then dancing around, getting the left-side tire out of the groove. Then he crossed the centerline, sideswiping Arend's car before yanking it back to the right, taking out the finish line markers. It didn't affect the outcome because Arend's car started to rattle the tires and he had to pedal it, letting the two cars in the right-hand set of lanes take the top two spots. Well, that let Lee take the second spot because Hagan, whose team also had to rebuild his car yesterday, made a great run and probably would have been the winner anyway.

Finish Order & Margins:

1. Matt Hagan was 0.2328 sec./more than 100 feet ahead
2. Paul Lee, who was 0.356 sec./more than 100 feet ahead
3. Jeff Arend.
4. Robert Hight

Round 2 Eliminations

Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 2
CONCORD, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals:

W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

(1) Ashley Force Hood (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.099 4.122 288.64
(2) Matt Hagan (DieHard Charger) 0.169 4.106 305.98
(3) Cruz Pedregon (Snap-On Solara) 0.016 4.292 299.60
(4) Paul Lee (Jim Dunn/Canidae/Lucas Oil Impala 0.118 7.224 93.48

1:56 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 64 degrees, relative humidity 62 percent, barometer 29.24 inches, adjusted altitude 1,730 feet, track temperature 73 degrees.

Lee rattled the tires and slowed. Pedregon had a great light, but his car ran another "twenty" and that wasn't quick enough. The race on the top end was in the left two lanes and Force Hood won that contest on a holeshot - but Hagan will have lane choice. Confusing!

Finish Order & Margins:

1. Ashley Force Hood was 0.0546 sec./about 25 feet ahead
2. Matt Hagan, who was 0.033 sec./about 15 feet ahead
3. Cruz Pedregon, who was 3.034 sec./more than 100 feet ahead
4. Paul Lee

(1) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.041 4.064 313.29
(2) Ron Capps (NAPA Auto Parts Charger) 0.068 4.064 312.50
(3) Tim Wilkerson (Levi, Ray & Shoup Mustang) 0.080 4.061 306.26
(4) Jack Beckman (Valvoline/MTS Charger) 0.057 4.505 199.73

This was a great race...Beckman the first to fall behind, his car faltering around the 660-foot marker. Wilkerson had an average light and the quickest ET of the round, but he finished third, on holeshots by Force and Capps. Force got the win light and Capps Matched Force's ET for second.

Finish Order & Margins:
1. John Force was 0.0275 sec./about 13 feet ahead
2. Ron Capps, who was 0.009 sec./about 4 feet ahead
3. Tim Wilkerson, who was 0.421 sec./more than 100 feet ahead
4. Jack Beckman.

Force will have lane choice in the final, then Capps, then Hagan, and Force Hood will get whatever lane is left over.
