TOPEKA, Kan. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.208/292.33, Now #1
Right Lane: Jim Head No Time, Now #2
Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 51 percent, barometer 28.75 inches, adjusted altitude 3,188 feet, track temperature 107 degrees.
Head did the burnout and then couldn't get it out of reverse so he shut it off. Lee after not qualifying last weekend run a career quickest E.T. on a very nice pass here. Paul Lee's incremental times: 60ft-0.929 sec., 330ft-2.388, 660ft-3.390/257.43 miles per hour.

That was weird Capps chute came out for no apparent reason and then right after that Hagan's chute deployed.

TOPEKA, Kan. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon No Time, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.195/299.00, Was #10
Weather conditions: air temperature 88 degrees, relative humidity 56 percent, barometer 28.56 inches, adjusted altitude 4,391 feet, track temperature 107 degrees.
Pedregon was on a good pass until around 800 feet when all of a sudden it made a quick move toward the centerline and collected the finish line cones.

Head and Arend have each won 1 times against the other in prior events. They leave together and Head is in the lead until just past half track when the Heads engine let go with a massive explosion. The body broke in half and went flying really high. Then there is a lot fire coming back into Head's face and the chutes are out but he can't see where he is going. Arend takes the win and has the chutes out and he doesn't know what is going on behind him when Head's car ran into the back of Arend's car, it didn't hit him hard. The report from the top end is it bent the wheelie bar and flatten a rear slick.
