Can I buy any 727 for my 440?
Moving along with my RB conversion. I have been instructed to buy an old 727 and have it re-built. Can I buy any year 727?
It is a 1968 Satellite and a 1978 RB 440.
Thanks

I THINK there are two different types of 727's. Some are longer than the other. This is because some are for small blocks, and the others are for big blocks. Someone else can give you a better answer though.

While looking through the PAW catalog, I noticed it gave a measurement for the difference in the big and small block 727s. It shows a BB 727 as having an 18-3/8" tailshaft, and on the bellhousing, a distance of 6-1/2" between the mounting bolts on the top. The SB 727 has a distance of 7-3/4". These appear to me mounting bolt locations, so dont confuse them with locating dowel holes. Hope that helps.
the pre 65 727's both big and small block have different valve bodies and shifter linkage, some are set up for push button selectors. Go with a 67 and up tranny as more parts and upgrades are out there.

You want to stay 66 to 80 in the year of the tranny. There is a short and long shaft you want the long shaft. There is also a difference in the housing.Your big block will have 4 7/16 bolts to hold your inspection plate on small block will have 3.. The bell housing on the big block is larger than your small block. Also most short shafts have a bolt on yolk and big block are slip on...Octane
