freeze plug??????

Hey all, so i've been replacing all the steering components on my 1970 dodge dart with a 318. While I got the steering out of the car i figured i would drop the oil pan, clean it out, and put a new gasket on. While i had the oil pan out of the car i realized that there is a finger sized hole on the bottom of the block, driver side in the rear of the engine facing down. There is another one on the front of the block, driver side, that has a freeze plug in it. I was wondering if there needs to be a freeze plug in the rear hole? Not really sure what these could be used for and they are only present on the driver side of the engine; just outside of where the oil pan is located. any thoughts?

The one in the back is open to the bellhouse area, the front is not plugged it is a drilled blind hole. These were used in the manufacturing process to mount and align the block for each operation of machining.
