Holley carburetor dripping gas

Holley carburetor dripping gas

Ive got a 340 Ive been working on and the Holley carb is dripping gas underneath near curb idle screw. Only after try to start motor
Not a constant drip you have to stare at it for a moment and then another drip.
whats the cause of this?

do you want you mopar to run right? then make it like the factory made it. toss the holley. get a carter AVS, like uncle Walter made it.

If I understand when you say "try to start" it hasn't started then you had a look. If this is the case fuel from the accelerator pump has collected on the primary throttle blades and has migrated along the shaft and is coming out the worn throttle body (plate).

If you take the spring and linkages off then wiggle the shaft up and down when closed and then open 45 degees you should get your answer.

The throttle shaft / throttle body could be worn, or the floats could be too high, needles leaking past, or fuel boiling on shut down, causing fuel to boil over into the throttle bores. Does it matter hot/ cold? Can you detect fuel dripping/ leaking into the throttle bores when shut off?

It drips when its cold not sure about hot because I havent drove it in like 4 years. Just today put new fuel pump on because alot of gas in oil.
It ran awesome for the first 8 years no problems at all til my neighbor suggested I hose the engine off It hasnt ran right since so Ive had it garaged about 4 years only occasionally starting it. (shes mad at me now I can feel it).
Loss of snap and dying after a couple minutes idleing.
Had the carb rebuilt twice to no improvement. I didnt realize then that my oil was no good.
I love every inch of this car as it was a gift from my dad so changing any parts I never liked to think about.
Moes suggestion I am considering though. I do want it to run right.
Il have to take a closer look tommorow inside it for the other response.
I did remove the side screws to see if fuel level was right at the edge of the holes and both were.

my problem with holles was similar the leaking accel pump, plate will warp after years
and your power valve may be seeping gas... when my holl did this it would puddle on the manifold, and cause a rich mix, the power valve would still open correctly but it made the carb run rich
of course the usual seeping gaskets sorry to say i had not found a set of gaskets that would last long with the ethanol fuel. maybe thats something to do with our state and their "blend" of the fuel.
so i went with the eddy 650 avs .
i would like to run my holli 650 dp on my combo i feel the car would gain some from those full throttle smash it to the floor runs
not saying there is anything wrong with the eddy, i would just like to compare the two with a few runs down the road.

when you hosed off this motor you have to blow out all the electrical connections including the distributor.
and really you should have covered the dizzy with a plastic bag so water would'nt hit it you most likely are suffering from corroded connections and if you had water in the dizzy and other ignition parts...
there are parts in there that don't appreciate it.
but you biggest mistake was letting her sit you should go over all electric systems under that hood and make sure you connectors aren't corroded
and definitely go over the ignition system

and what do you mean your oil was bad?

All the Holley haters LMAO.. Thats why Mopar used them on all the baddest Mopars ever built,,, Because they were junk LOL...

Did what you said and when opened at 45degrees it did drip.

I had about 4 gallons of oil/gas drain out of the oil pan.
Put new fuel pump on and engine would run but had a leak at the out take hose of new fuel pump. I tried to wrench the fitting down tighter and snapped it off
So I bought a new pump yesterday and now its not leaking but car wont fire up.
Cant tell if the new pump is working but since carb is dripping gas it must be right?

for dependable dodge/plymouth used two carter AFBs in the STREET HEMI. 1966 throu 1971. but did use two holleys on the race HEMI. but the holley they put on a 1967 chrysler 440, was nothing but trouble. dodge/plymouth use a different holley than the chrysler 440.

I dont hate any carbs, Q-jets, carters, eddys, or holleys. But if I have a decent cam gears and a stall and want high performance,, or any marine application its going to be a holley. Any mild engine is fine with anything else if jetted correct..

I was a hater of certain carbs at one time untill I learned how to work on them.. I love to work on them now,, because most gears heads dont they just say their junk.. The best book I have ever bought in my life was a Holley book... How to supertoon your holley..

Any high performace car on the track today has a holley on it unless its injected.. Argue that,, thats a fact,, dont belive go to the track and look for yourself..Jack

good way of putting it PURPLE HORONET
i have used q-jet's hollies and now carter/eddy
i have read the book How to supertoon your holley, years ago great info.
as far as simplicity if tuning hollies are the most labor intensive of the three
my eddy is easy to tune, don't have to drain the float bowls and such we are all familiar with the issues.
and i would love to tune my 650 DP to compare the two.
But other priorities before i get to that.

Why don't you try actually adding some helpful technical answers to this site instead of being an idiot troll?

I've run just about every carb every made since the early sixties, and in a few cases, before that. I've run Holleys of all kinds, Carters, Strombergs, Thermojunks, Quadraflush, yes, I"ve used, and heard them all. All have their good and bad, but to not get one to run right IN GENERAL means YOU the mechanic has not done his job.

The quickest way for YOU the "so called" "mechanic" to turn me off would be to make fun of my car in "your" shop.

"Sell your XYZ and buy and ABC" Yep. That's the answer.

I see you're a Holley Hater. Gee I wonder how "six packs" would'ha turned out if we hadn't had Holley carbs, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmkay?

get a rebuild kit. and also get a god book on how to properly tune a holley carb. i think there is only one holley that was junk as i had to rebuild the thing every weekend. it was a 2 bbl progressive carb on a 1985 chevette.

I have used a Holley, Carter AFB, Thermoquad I liked the factory 800cfm on a 360 - Hard to find in good condition. Most of this is before ethanol crap though.

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes

Well put RR440. people always hated the thermoquad too. Because they didnt know how to tune or overhaul them. One of the biggest problems was that they missed the 2 little seals in the float bowls causing the engine to flood when making a turn/corner. Causing the engine to stall and restart hard in the process.

Yes those bowl O rings were special too. They were sq cut not round. SO don't try round O rings

The 67-68 Factory Holleys had a problem.. They needed a heat insulator. Motor heat would kill them in short order
