PERTRONIX IGNITION TROUBLESHOOTING

Hey all,

well I installed a pertronixs points replacement ignition and coil on my 65 Plymouth belvedere II 273.

questions.

it starts with the initial cranking of the engine and sounds strong , then once the ignition switch is released it dies. What would cause that

What the heck is a power transistor? the instructions give away to test the ignition and according to them they say that the power transistor shorting out might be the cause of the problem?

Any help would be great

Thanks

You have a bad Ballast resistor on the firewall. Drivers side, near the top it's the white porcelain piece with the wires attached. Bypass it and see if that does it. You won't want to run it that way for damage to the coil but for a test it is fine.

i did that in the initial setup . the coil instructions said to bypass it so i removed the connector and soldered the two wire ends together. I figured that that was a solid way to bypass it but i still cant get the car to run after the initial crank.

I figured it out. For the 65 plymouth wiring harness you have to take all 4 wires that run into the ballast resistor and wire them all together. what i did was wire the starting circuit but not the running circuit so i was getting juice when i cranked the key into the start position but not when it came back to the run position. Once i figured that out it started right up and then i set the timing and she is good to go.

hope this helps someone
