Power Steering Leak

Hi,

the power steering fluid on my 68 newport is leaking out very quickly (within 2 days it is dry) but I am having a very hard time determining where the leak is coming from. I cleaned the engine off really good and filled it and tried to watch where it was coming from and could not figure it out. any suggestions as to how I can locate the leak?

Thanks,

Gary

Take it to the car wash and steam it off. spray it down with some foot powderTake it for a short drive & then check for leaks. Pay attention to the return hose and the steering box seals

probably the lower steering box seal look for oil around the pitman arm. you have to look under the car. If it was from ontop you would see it somewhere.

Ok here is where I sound like a total idiot.

It seems like the leak is coming out of the top of the steering box.

there is a 19mm bolt on top of what looks like a bushing but i think is a pressure fitting and then a ring around that approximatley 2.5-3 inches in diameter that has a couple slots on the top of it that look like they are for a special tool to tighten it down. Im not 100% positive if this is where the leak is or if this is the "lower steering box seal that you were referring to but has anyone seen this before and how would I stop that leak?

Thanks

Opening up a power steering gear (box) is not for the faint of heart and a proper manual is a must.

I got one from these people and it was a good buy and a good product. There is lots of stuff in the steering gear that if not taken apart properly in the right sequence with some specialty tools can easily be ruined. Rebuild kits are available.
