I can rebuild a V8, but 2-strokes and mowers ALWAYS kick my ***! I cant even get my new f$%#&n chain saw started! My neighbor just retired and bought a $23,000 John Deere tractor. It has a plow and I CANT STOP him from plowing my driveway!

How old is it? You may need to pull teh carb, tear it down and clean it. Sometimes the gas jells up and clogs the jets.
I have an MTD that is 15 years old and it runs great.

I am pretty sure it's a Briggs&Stratton motor,on the bottom of the fuel bowl is the main adjuster, first turn in all the way counting number of turns then take the adjuster out and spray some carb cleaner in there, sometimes that works. Check the governor linkage also, make sure its free.Check the spark, should be blue,if it's yellow, the flywheel key might be sheared part way through. Hope this helps in time for today's snow!

do you have spark? if so, start doing little stuff that could kill it. like old gas.
make sure you clean the carb. 2 strokes are very lucky about carbs. a little off and they wont run. depending on what model engine you have. the carb should have 2 screws. an idle adjustment screw and a air fuel mixture screw.
the air fuel mix should be anywhere from 1.5 - 3 turns out. so turn the screw in lightly until it gets a little tough to turn in. then turn the screw 1.5 turns out. and adjust it between 1.5 and 3 until it runs smooth.
the idle screw should be set high enough for it to start. then once running, turn it in until it reaches a nice idle speed.
check compression also.
hope this helps.
DO NOT USE STARTER FLUID!! starter fluid is terrible for 2 strokes. i don't recommend it. it doesn't lubricate at all. what you can do, and i usualy do this for snowmobiles and such, if there a b**** to start is, take a little mixed gas, take the spark plug out and put in in the cylinder. not a lot. just a few drops. then pull it over. if it tries to start. you know you have a fuel/air problem.

I hate to tell you this but MTD is generally a low-end brand that was never designed to last for long. My experience with the brand is that it's made just well enough to last 3, maybe 4 years before things start wearing out. Is there a Techumseh engine in it? If so chances are very likely you've hit the end of it's life and it's time for a new one. Sorry dude.

I've got my parent's MTD snow blower. They had it for 14 years and I used it this year with no problems. I think sometimes it's just how well people take care of them.

Petty Enterprises has switched to Ford this year.. A partnership between the Petty clan and Robert Yates and they are fielding Fords... Very sad day for Mopar... Penske is the only Dodge team left in the "cup series".

I think a lot of us have a bad case of "cabin fever". Here we are on a Mopar site talking about snow blowers... Been a VERY long winter and its still not over.... Even in Florida!!!!!!
