starting the old beast

well if you read my intro you will know the whole situation with getting this thing started.

the fluids were drained before it sat so im thinking new fluids, new spark plugs and also spraying wd 40 into the cylinders and turning it over by hand before starting then put a new battery in it, unhook the fuel pump (gas line leaks) just add gas to the carb and try to get it cranked up.

anything else i need to do?

66sportfury 02-28-2009 09:21 PM

clean the carb, maybe drain the tank/lines. and prime the oil pump. should be good to go.

how you go about priming the oil pump? is it completely nessesary?

instead of WD40 I would use Marvel Mystery oil

into the cylinder? or just use that type of oil to fill it up?

to prime the oil pump, the intake manifold needs to be taken off

does the oil pump have to be primed

67 GTX 03-01-2009 08:14 AM

it would probably be best for the engine
it sat for so long, all the oil probably drained down to the oil pan
did you change the oil?

78D200 03-01-2009 08:15 AM

Use Marvel in the cylinders. Pull the plugs and squirt in a few drops. THat will help the rings seal up better that WD40.

all the fluids were drained be for it sat when he parked it he drained everything

67 GTX 03-01-2009 08:24 AM

if it sat for so many years, valves probably rusted together
same thing happened with my car

63sportfury 03-01-2009 08:28 AM

so is it still possible it will run?

67 GTX 03-01-2009 08:29 AM

yes
you have to carefully bare the engine over by hand first
while doing it, if you feel resistance, back off, they try again easier

63sportfury 03-01-2009 08:48 AM

heres what i should do in order, correct me if i am wrong

put new fluids in
put a few drops of oil into the cylinders
turn over by hand making sure nothing is binding
new plugs
disconnect the fuel pump
put a battery in it
add fuel into the carb
attempt to start it

67 GTX 03-01-2009 09:42 AM

ya, that seems good
when baring it over by hand, if you take out the spark plugs, it'll be easier for you

63sportfury 03-01-2009 09:44 AM

ok

63sportfury 03-01-2009 09:48 AM

what kind of oil do you guys reccommend for a car like this?

67 GTX 03-01-2009 09:59 AM

you should read this: https://moparforums.com/forums/f62/o...-engines-2333/

63sportfury 03-01-2009 10:22 AM

so i need oil with zinc additive? anything else special? what weight etc... should i get

67 GTX 03-01-2009 12:05 PM

i use rotella T its a 15-40
i also use a zinc additive

63sportfury 03-01-2009 01:03 PM

alright im gonna try it all next weekend. how do i turn it over by hand i dont think i can get a socket down there or can i?

67 GTX 03-01-2009 01:07 PM

you put a breaker bar on the bolt that holds the crank in

63sportfury 03-01-2009 01:16 PM

do you happen to know what size the bolt is?

67 GTX 03-01-2009 01:18 PM

hmmm, not exactly, but it is a BIG bolt
around an inch or more maybe

63sportfury 03-01-2009 01:32 PM

i hope i can get a breaker bar down there im not sure if its possible with out removing the radiator. counter clockwise or clockwise?and how many times should i turn it over

67 GTX 03-01-2009 01:38 PM

you should be able to do it
you go clockwise
turn it over a few times, enough so the pistons move freely

63sportfury 03-01-2009 01:39 PM

should itbe hard to turn or easy or in the middle?

67 GTX 03-01-2009 01:43 PM

if the spark plugs are in, it'll be hard
remove them, and it'll be in the middle (you still are moving all the metal, so it wont be easy)

63sportfury 03-01-2009 01:45 PM

should i add the oil before or after i turn it

67 GTX 03-01-2009 01:47 PM

before
