this is all in accordance to the Haynes Repair Manual for 1971-1989 Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler Book No. 30050 series.

Completely clean the suspected area and drive vehicle slowly for a short time as to not cause the wind to cause fluid to travel too far, then park over cardboard or something similair to help pinpoint where leak may be. Common leak areas :
1)Fluid pan - tighten and/or replace gasket if necessary
2)Rear extension- tighten bolts and/or replace seal
3)Filler pipe - replacer rubber oil seal where pipe enters trans. case
4)Trans. fluid lines- tighten fittings and/or replace lines
5)vent pipe- trans is overfilled and/or water in fluid
6)Speedo. connector- replace O-ring where speedo cable enters trans case

Make sure the sealing flange is straight and not bent. No loose or missing bolts. If the gasket itself is leaking, it may be due to high fluid levels or high fluid pressure, meaning the vent pipe may be plugged, pan bolts too tight, sealign surface warped or damaged, gasket no good, or wrong sealing agent applied.

I reccomend picking up this manual at an Auto store like Advanced Auto Parts, only a couple of bucks. Has a lot more to it, such as Bolt Tq'ing specs, and basically a really good complete rebuild guide for All transmissions and engines and Body styles, gives part numbers, and interchangables, etc etc... hopefully that little bit may point you in the right direction...I personally also suspect that stripped bolt hole and some warpage....hopefully you can get it right w/out needing a new pan.
