318 Engine power
i Know there is an article on hotrod.com of them making basically stock 318 with over 400 hp. I was wondering how reliable that engine is?Everyone says that you should throw your 318 away and get a 360. I rather keep the 318 if it could beat the 360 has anyone ever tried to build this engine.
here is a link to the buildup.

I dont think it said what gas they used.
Im trying to spend as little money as possible thats y im asking about the 318. cause on the website they said the spent about 1500.
when you mean a smaller engine do you mean just the 318 or every small block.

I've got this program called dyno2000. Its a engine simulator.
By using the numbers that they gave in the article I have the following:
408hp at 6000rpm
389ftlbs at 4500rpm.
So in theory it is possible to build this engine.
Although, i doubt it could be done for that price.

The real problem is , guys, that ounce you build the 318, after you drive it a season, its not enough, you spend more to upgrade it. then the next season it still isnt enough. so then you go to the 360. when done you cant beleive the power gains, and wonder why you messed w/ the 318 to start w/ then you want more out of the 360. Its a visious circle. aaask most of the senior wrenchers here. they`ll confirm this. hopefully youll learn from us and spend a little more the first time and be overly happy you did. can I get a few amens here? Id say do a 360, and do a mild build about 3-3500. then do the trans the next year . then the rear. Youll be happy I think.

you can't beat cubes on a budget
thats why i bought a b engine .
although i met a guy at the drags who had a similar a body to mine & he ran 11.88 can't remember mph . thats with 318 cubes . it was using his 360 parts while building another 360 short motor .

The 318 is a good solid motor. You can get those number out of it but how much work did they do themselves, how much of a deal did they get on parts, who did the machine work if any.
I would only throw and intake, carb, headers and dizzy at a 318. I would never tear into one if I wanted to build a powerplant. You can get a good 360 long block for that price and still have some left over for some parts.
There is no substitute for cubic inches.

so youre running a 340 crank in a 318 block? what heads and cam are you going to use? what compression are you going with?
you can probably build a given amount of power with the 360 for less than the 318. im running a 528 cam, ported 1988 360 heads, airgap, bg750, and 9 to 1 compression in the mirada, making enough power to put a 3800lb car into the 12.30s...on 89 octane.
