440 Block Question
Im a newbie, so forgive me if Iv posted in the wrong spot. I have a 440 stamped 2536430 + 1 on the side with the date 12/20/65. I know the 440 was introduced in 66 so this must be a very early block. My 2 questions are what does the 1 at the end of the casting denote and the heads I have are casting # 2406516 which makes them 361/383/413/426 64-67 heads. I cant find any casting numbers for a 440 until 67. Did they have 440 specific heads in late 65 into 66 or did they just throw on a smaller displacment head. I have the complete engine in a box and was thinking about a restoration. I really wanted to find out if its possible those are the heads it rolled out with. Thank you.

I'm not familiar with 440 casting no's but remember that model years used to be introduced pretty early, or even late in the previous year, so I would not find a date late in '65 to be "very early", It simply would have been in a car made for the 66-67 model year. so far as heads, I cannot find the casting no with a Google search, but the '66-67 heads were an "odd" year and were considered "very good."
Remember that '68 was the big year federally for smog engines, and by then the Chivvies all had smog pumps. I think that was the reason that the "good" 66-67 heads were only used on those years. Seems to me the casting no. for the "good" 66-67 heads were 90x something, 906, 907? I wish someone could find out and post, it's been a LONG time for me.
As old as all those cars and engines are by now, ANYTHING could have happened over the years.
HMMMMM here's a page, and they claim that those heads were 915. I don't remember that they were every used on 383's, as shown here:

This page shows the 915 heads -- and I'm sure those are the ones I'm thinking of, only being used on '67 440's. I THOUGHT they were used in '66, too, but maybe not

I found this site that has the casting number for the 66-67 440 heads. I guess through time the ones I have got now where swapped in. Thanks for your help, it will be my first build away from Chivvies.

Hi, I just recently ended a 1.5 hour drive / that took 5 hours!!!) as my -68 300 that I just purchased started running hot! The car is a mint condition -68 chrysler 300 with a 440 TNT. Yesterday I took it for a test ride and everything turned out ok, went back to the seller today and took it for another spin and everything was just sweet. After the purchase was done I was heading home cruising at roughly 65mph, when the red "hot" lamp came on!!! ( after ca 31 miles..)
Ok, I stopped, checked, no leaks, filled up with water and continued for another 25 miles when I had to stop again.. this was repeated 4 times before I made it home.
Car has probably sitting still for 1- 3 years, and the oil cooler for the transmisson is huge and is just in front of the radiator.. could this be blocking air flow?
Any help to a new mopar guy is greatly appreciated,
nice greeting from Sweden!
