7 3/4 8/3/4

Can anyone help me out? School me on how to tell different rearends. And what would be the ideal rearend for street/strip?

7 1/4 - Smallest axle, cam in slant 6 / 318 type applications

8 1/4 - Fairly heavy duty, came in later 70 type cars, behind 360s and they hold

8 3/4 - Strongest. Very heavy duty. Pretty hard to break though it does happen. This is most recommended.

Dana 60 - Ultimate. If you have an all out race car and plan on racing an 11 sec 4 speed car, use this. Will most liekly never break.


the 7 1/4 and 8 1/4 and Dana have a rear cover on the back. The Dana had a big bulge on the cover though so there is no mistaking it.

The 8 3/4 has a round type look to it. No bolts or anything on the back. Just the 10 bolts for the 3rd member.


If you get an 8 3/4 out of anything BUT an a-body, you need to have it cut down to A-body housing length. I'm pretty sure you have an A-body if I remember right.

I run 11s and have a 42 year old 8 3/4 with 42 year old stock axles and a stock 3.55 42 year old sure grip
