..New here. Lots of good info!
I have a 74 duster 440 drag car which was my dads. Will get some pics up later. Just getting it ready to start & learning about this car.
It has a power glide 2 speed trans with a Hurst shifter very similar to this:

I need someone to explain how to operate the shifter, you have the one hand lever on top & the short lever at the bottom. Not sure how these work ..It also has trans brake ,along with a slew of electronics . Thanks.....

The long bicycle type lever lever is to move the shifter ALL the way back ? is first ratchet forward is drive I think ! once more to neutral The little lever activates the reverse lock out !! from neutral pull the lever up and you can shift to reverse.
This may not be 100% correct but gives you the idea.
That must be a wild motor Trans brake ? Guessing it has a 5-6k rpm stall torque converter
It's like a controlled drop from neutral to low with the motor running at 5K RPM

Welcome to the site..... TVLynn got it rite for you.... Hope to see some pictures and a little more about the car and yourself. Sounds like a great son and dad project. Good luck with it and hope you have fun with it. i think we will all try to help you if we can....

We have been doing some things to get it ready it was in the hauler a couple of years & have been taking all the precautions we can.
Pre-oiled the motor & oil came up really well. Hand turned the motor, smooth.
It ran fine when it was last run. More work to do before fire up but getting there.. Will get the photos up in a few days.

New fuel filter , cleaned the lines & put in the 110 fuel ,coolant replaced along with a few other must haves but when we went to crank it over no electric to the starter . Fuel pump on, water pump on, gauges on but nothing when the start button is pushed.
Have electric everywhere but the starter???? Thought we had it in neutral ,had the rear wheels off the ground & on stands ,nothing at the starter.. So maybe it needs to be in park?
Tried to shift into park or whatever but the shiftier only went to straight back & forward one notch. It may be a reverse shiftier??? Seems it didn't want to move any further forward..It also has a automatic shifter . Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Well Bob I just don't know not even sure what my dad run it in .
This is going to be a learning experience I,m looking forward to.
I messed with the shiftier today & now can shift it where I want I believe the starting problem was not being in the right position to allow the neutral safety switch to function properly.

I see the HR on the window..... Looks like he ran it in a class called "HotRod".
Did your dad give you any of the time slips?
Sounds like the 2 speed Power guild/ looks like electric shifted,
you just pull it down into low gear, and what ever you set the shift chip too.. once it hits the chip it shift into high gear. All you need to do is steer it straight.
Any idea what the car should leave at RPM wise?

Good news, Have the 440 running it was just that the shiftier had to be just right.
Had it on jack stands at first then on the ground trying to find reverse & running it for a little while ( worked fine in forward gears) checked trans. oil looked to be a little low it read at the cold mark added a little to bring it up to warm...but didn't seem to help the reverse ...Had it in reverse but couldn't identify it for sure.
80- oil pressure idle. All gauges look satisfactory' and working properly. No leaks!
Going to change oil & check or change rear end oil.
Now next Sunday maybe I'll go to the local track & play with it some.... Happy with the outcome so far...

Very Cool.......Once you pull it all the way down into low gear and feel it go up into second. That part should be good....
After getting the wheels stopped.... You grab the shifter, pull the long lever then push the shifter forward, that should take it to Neutral.
At that point, you push the little lever toward the front of the car, (Some of them just unlock and some you have to hold in that position) before you can move the shifter into reverse. I'm sure the car has a Transbreak. You have to hold in the button in on the steering wheel to activate reverse. If you dont push the button in it will act like the trans is locked and not move.
Do it on the stand till you understand it....
Then From there you should be able to push it up into park. Or you have to squeeze the long lever one more time to push it up into park...
Sound about rite.... Or does this make scene at all?....lol
Drive it easy the first few passes to re-shack the car down...
Set the front tire air pressure to the MFG setting on the tire.
Rears set to about 12-14 PSI....

Makes great sense, I wasn't sure where the little lever should be tried several combos . I will try tomorrow & see what happens , Is it right you have to be in neutral to be able to go to reverse?
Now oh yes the trans brake didn't know about pushing the button it has these buttons mounted on the floor beside driver one large round button & one small button right beside it??

I'm going to guess.... The small one is the transbreak.....
The large one will more than likely be be the shifter sol. override button?
Also be careful.. This could be a reverse valve body, so if it acts backwards from what we are talking, you will get the idea.

Pretty sure it's a reverse shiftier....Can you believe yet another question? lol
After running the car a little while the headers got hot & boiled the brake fluid leaking a little down on the pipes this has been a problem for a while at least as long as these pipes have been on the car because the m/c is touching the pipes can't get a piece of paper between them.
So thinking of trying to move the m/c using the bottom 2 holes to the top holes then drilling & maybe putting a plate between to mount to & cover the hole
if possible . Rather than buying a offset or something...What do you think?

You might be able to use a header flange to move it away?

Much better then moving the m/c .
Thought of buying a new m/c I think the one that is on it is original & wonder about heat damage even after it has clearance.
