Advice? To replace entire distributor system on 1974 Plymouth Duster 340
Summary car ran great when I put in into storage 1999 Now mechanics say 1974 was the first year for electronic ignition ( 340) Control box on drivers fire wall is seeping fluid and shot. They have not found a replacement that works I would prefer to junk the 1974 2 control modules for the distributor and replace it with an all new bolt into place system I am thinking a 1972 normal distributor with vacuum advance or is there a stand alone electronic distributor kit you all recommend I can drop in I have 7 classics and need to get them running well to sell
They started in 1972 with ECU as an option. Yes I agree they're all over the place and very interchangeable.
Could you replace it with a regular distributor with points and vacuum advance? Yes, but I wouldn't. Chrysler's electronic ignitions worked great.
If you do opt for a standard distributor like they used in the 60's. I used Petronix ignition in my 383 and 440 cars and they too worked great.
Your working on a fifty year old ignition system, , the fact that the ECU has lasted this long is a true tribute to its engineering success. You can purchase a quality ECU from Jegs or things happen overnight summit.
