? Best 340 Combos new project?

So here is the skinny, I am buying a complete 340 (carb to oil pan) from a very good friend and I want to build it for this coming up woodward dream cruise.

I want roughly between 400-500 horse at the crank

*Question- Do you guys have any proven combos for Cam, Heads, Intake, Carb, Headers, Converter...and whatever else I might need to get this kind of power!

I have 3.55 gears with a 8 3/4 so hopefully this is sufficient.

Needs to fit in my 73' Duster!!

Thanks again~ Sean

Auto and around $2500 I think. I can put more into it after a couple months!

Even if I do not get it finished before August I still want to do it right and with the correct/ good parts that wont come apart after 5k miles lol

What year is the motor? You might consider a stroker kit ? Shoot for 400 hp Spend the $2500 on the short block./ Re bore with KB pistons 9.5 compression, good balance job, 7 qt oil pan, windage tray STOCK oil pump. ARP main studs, & rod bolts. Use your current heads JUST do a valve job Save your money for some eddie heads later

Streetable 400 HP can be achieved as stated above. A stock short block with good compression and a set of higher flow cylinder heads and your at 400HP.

Budget wise use stock replacement parts in a cast or hyp piston, stock rods and stock crank. ( I'm assuming you have the rods and crank and need a new slug for a rebore?)

Get a set of EQ heads bare and set them up with a lightweight 2.02 valve. I think Ive spec'd machining on here before. This would change the oiling to thru PR design.

Add headers and Airgap

These heads will le you run a moderate cam. 224/230 or equivalent and hit your goal.

Nice part about this build is you can stroke it as suggested above and keep the heads, airgap, headers and put it back together.

Motor year is a 1971, anything odd I should know about this year?? Also why did you capitalize windage tray "STOCK" oil pump? I guess I do not know much about oil pumps for this. lol

71 may have a cast crank ?? The HV oil pump hits on the oil pan most of the time & requires some grinding. Also a HV pump can suck the pan dry at extended high RPM. The stock pump is actually quite good...

Thanks again for the info. I had no idea about the HV pumps being able to dry out the oil pan, I have never heard that before.

Good advice!

I have done it on a stock 360 pan. Chevies need a HV pump Mopars don't. So unless you are olanning 8-9K RPM's it is not necessary. YOU need a minimunm 7 qt oil pan if you use a HV pump
