The Advancement of Pneumatic Tires

My thoughts, borrowed from About.com

Charles Goodyear invented vulcanized rubber in 1844 that was later used for tires.
In 1888, John Dunlop invented the air-filled or pneumatic tires, however, his were for bicycles.
In 1895, André Michelin was the first person to use pneumatic tires on an automobile, however, not successfully.
In 1911, Philip Strauss invented the first successful tire, which was a combination tire and air filled inner tube. Strauss' company the Hardman Tire & Rubber Company marketed the tires.
In 1903, P.W. Litchfield of the Goodyear Tire Company patented the first tubeless tire, however, it was never commercially exploited until the 1954 Packard.
In 1904, mountable rims were introduced that allowed drivers to fix their own flats. In 1908, Frank Seiberling invented grooved tires with improved road traction.
In 1910, B.F. Goodrich Company invented longer life tires by adding carbon to the rubber.
Goodrich also invented the first synthetic rubber tires in 1937 made of a patented substance called Chemigum.

All else revolves around having good tires!

Having driven 49- 53 Chev pickups, 55 Chev wagon, a 56? Rambler, 54 Jag XK-120, 60 Falcon, 63 chev, 68?9? Valiant "loaner," 64 Dodge 440 / 426, 69 383 RR, 70 440-6 (my first car with disk brakes and really decent handling) the much hated "Skud missile" 78 Ferd LTDII, 86 Dodge 600 (K car) and on and on.............95 Olds, 98 Ranger.......and on and on

I cannot believe anyone would make such a statement. My 98 Ranger outhandles anything I ever drove before the 70 RR, and just about ANY modern econo-box will outhandle, out stop and out mileage, and in many cases out perform most any old "family" Valiant, Dart or Falcon

Cold and hot start problems are nearly an imaginary ghost of the past, along with flat tires and a host of other roadside emergencies.

Engines and whole cars in general outlast "the old stuff" to a tremendous degree. Hell, if you got 100K on a 55 Chev with no major work, they'd think you were Kearieest himself.

Just look at a 318 magnum compared to the old 70's LA. At LEAST as good mileage, better starting, more power, and far outlasts the old girls.
