I have a 1969 Plymouth which needed a new neutral safety switch. When I purchased the car it had, and still has a brand new 727 transmission. Apparently the owner previous to me put the old switch on the new transmission and I believe he cross threaded it in. When I was attempting to remove the old switch it snapped in half where the threads meet the body of the switch. There is nothing to grab onto on the outside of the switch as it has broken flush on the outside of the transmission. I drained the trans fluid and removed the pan off the bottom. The inside of the switch (which is round) is accessible now, but I cannot turn it with a wrench. The only other options I can think of are (A)-JB welding the broken portion of the switch back on and attempt to continue unscrewing it, if the JB weld will even hold. or (B)tapping a hole in the inner portion of the switch with a 1/8 bit, insert an 1/8 steel rod in this hole and using the rod in an attempt to torque the switch loose from the inside. Aside from these two options I have no Idea what to try next.

Whatever you do, be careful. The switch threads are probably harder than the transmission case, so you could easily screw up the case.

 

You could drill out the guts of the switch and use a nipple extractor. Put the extractor into the hole, tap it with a hammer, to get a bite, and use a wrench on the nipple extractor to back the switch body out of the transmission.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did not use the nipple extractor for fear of it damagine the innards of the tranny (Threaded portion was too long). I went and got myself a pipe extractor which looks like a snubbed version of the nipple extractor. Worked like a charm and did no damage to the tranny casing fortunately.

 

Right-on, way to jump in there and get it done.
