Fan Question

Is it normal for the fan not to line up perfectly with the radiator? I need to get a fan shroud and noticed that the fan is off to the left (when standing in front of the car looking down) not centered. The car (68 fury III) originally came with a 318 but now has a 440 in it. Not sure if the radiator is the original and needs to be swapped out or if this is normal.

Thanks for any help.

I have the same issue on my GTX clone. The radiator in the car is 22" which is for a 273 and 318. Mine should have a 26" radiator, and that is why it looks offset. Another thing I need to do at some point.......

Ok, so it sounds like I need to upgrade the radiator to a 26". Thank you, that's exactly the info I needed.

Great Link. Looks like either a 26" or 28". I was thinking of purchasing this off e bay: Radiator

I live near Irvine so I figure I could probably pickup in person to save on shipping.

it dosent need to be in the center. as long as the blades cover the radiator and it dosent over heat your good.

The problem is that it is overheating so I wanted to make some changes/improvements. I want to add a fan shroud and figure it's not going to fit right if it's not centered. In addition to the fan shroud I'm going to change the thermostat, flush the motor and add a fan clutch. Possibly a waterpump if necessary. Basically whatever it takes to make it run properly.

a fan clutch is a good addition, but it won't make it run any cooler
it'll just give you back some power

you'll find your / all of our engines are mounted off set to your passenger side . i was told this was to do with the steering box clearance . ????? I'm not 100% sure if thats the reason but thats what i was told .

when i first swapped my 318 for my 383 , after a very long day me & my mates were sitting on the ground in front of the car looking & talking about a job well done it's not in the middle one mate said . FARK so we packed up & went home came back the next day tryed everything still no good so we yanked out again . i bought new engine mounts that were meant to be big block conversion mounts . still no different yanked it again . so i bought another v8 k frame still no good . we rang around everywhere no good .
this was the reason i joined this site back in the day to ask this very same question . next day i was at a Chrysler swap meet & seen a guy selling shoemaker engine mounts told him whats going on & he told us this was normal blah blah blah . he was the one that told us that it was to clear your steering box . crazy thing is Chrysler Australia left it like that & our steering box is on the right hand side ( your passenger side ) so that makes it very hard to fit extractors on that side . so i wasted more money there .

you are correct there
the linkage pushes the engine over to the passenger side

Ok, that is good to know. Well here is a quick update since my last post.

I flushed the radiator and put a new thermostat and started the car in the garage and it seems to be at a normal tempature. I was starting to get happy when I noticed something odd regarding the belt. Yes I said belt as in only 1.

The PO aligned the alternator, waterpump, crank and power steering pulleys then wraped one belt around the whole thing. So the fan only has about 1 inch of belt touching the top part of it. So at idle it's fine but there's no way the fan is getting enough power once underway.

This car was originally a 318 now with a 440 and I think the PO used the original power steering bracket and alternator bracket so I'm gonna have to figure out how to get everything lined up correctly to use two separate belts. Does this sound right... I'm going to run the Alternator and Water Pump to the Crank on one belt and the Power Steering to the crank on another?

Thanks again.

On my 440, I have one belt for the crank and power steering, and another belt for the crank, fan and alternator.
