Friggin' Speeding Ticket

I got a speeding ticket in my four door dart with a slant six. Go figure.

I was doing 35 in a one block school zone, got pulled over, and wound up with a $350 dollar speeding ticket. I have no choice but to fight it...I'm hoping either the judge likes old Dodges, or the cop doesn't show up to court. Anyone ever have any luck with this?

Man did that put me in a crummy mood.

Google "How to" and fight a speeding ticket. Lots of info out there! After I was stopped by a cop for going 7 over on my 53 Harley chopper, I told him that "50 year old Harley speedos are not exactly calibrated to NASA specs!" Truth is, the speedo is for display purposes only! Not even hooked-up!

around here cops dont go to court. but if you make a court date they usually drop it in half. but thats over here. in a school zone might make it tough to fight?

I wouldn't even care about the fine if they take off the points. The insurance for an 18 year old with points is gonna be ridiculous.

I once got a speeding ticket in a school zone for doing 30mph.....on the rear wheel of my Honda. I told the cop I was sorry, but the bike got away from me and I was just holding on for dear life. He was a motor cop, and told me he had heard them all already. He ended up giving me a ticket for just the speeding and left out the wheelie and school zone. He could have really nailed me.

I would suggest going to court and see if there is an option to take a driving class. If you complete it successfully, they drop the ticket from your record. This is an option in Oregon anyway.... Good luck!

lets guess the reasoning for a wheelie in front of a high school...

It was actually a grade school, and no kids were outside. The reasoning was....no one is around.....pretty quiet.....good time for a wheelie! I honestly did not even notice the school zone until I was in it. My wheelie skills were not that good, so I was really enjoying my extended rear wheel ride.............until I heard the siren.

I think I have cop blindness.....similar things have happened before when I was SURE no cops were around!

Yea speeding tickets can be killer. here in Florida you can just take the class online to drop the points... i think once a year 5 times in a life (unless you go to court and get more chances.) I only got one ticket then bought and installed a radar detector.

I would go and ask the judge for court appointed supervision. Bringing a lawyer friend wouldn't hurt. Im 20 yrs old and Ive been tagged with 4 speeding tickets in my 4 cyl 2003 sebring but managed to keep my record clean to avoid those insurance hikes.

I am "ofer" in fighting thos e'tards; they have cost me so damn much money over the years I am sick; If you don't have a badge you have nop prayer other than maybe the azz not showing up; the "oath" to tell the truth means nothing; it comes down to "believe everything out of the guy with the badge's mouth and nothing from anyone else"
and when I have a legal document that says I am accused (didnt necessarily do) an offense that (by what is printed right onto the back side of it) is listed as being worth $75.00 including fines AND COSTS what freaking right does the system have in charging me "triple" and then claiming the difference as "court costs"?
and then to see the itemized list of what "court costs" are being ; Rape victims assistance fund fallen firefighters fund Teen Court (I'm 42 for God's sake, no teen anymoore) Document storage and on and on all things that have NOTHING to do with the fact that I am ACCUSED of drivinbg faster than a posted limit; how can that be legal? Are you for paying $100 for a $30 pair of blue jeans HELL NO! so why should it be "OK" to pay triple posted finmes? These azzwipes need to learn what "truth in advertising" means. I think the wrong "crooks" are taking up space in our prisons; there is no "innocence til proven guilty" You are in the courtroom on a given day/time, YOU ARE GUILTY! it is that simple. YES this is a sore subject;
and another thing; why do I NEVER EVER get a "break"; I see the cops "rollers I ALWAYS get the freaking TICKET! Like thank you for taking FOOD out of my son's mouth! OK mr goody 2 shoes; meaning the cop) you have ALWAYS done EVERYTHING PERFECT? unless your nameis Jesus H Christ NO you HAVEN'T! but you sure nail me to the Cross for the simplest of infractions! I sometimes feel the drug pushers and robbers of teh world are more likely to get a break than someone with just a heavy foot! (which I wish I could plant into a cop's a** just once)

Yeah, it looks like we hit a tender spot here. Most of the time I drive a 1998 Chevy Metro, so even if I do speed, no one looks or believes this car could actually speed. Now that my Plum Crazy GTX is back on the road, I am worried that I will be more "visible" and get my first ticket in a looooong time. Volaredon, I am like you, I never get the warning, I get the ticket. My ex wife got pulled over for speeding worse than I ever did (I was in the car with her), and she started crying and got a walk......piZZed me off!!!!

I got 3 in a row last August. Went to court and basically said I was guilty and that I will watch my speed next time and the Crown halved all 3 of the speeds of my tickets. Took 1.5 hours total and done. The Crown said they stopped taking all the demerits away in 2008. (Alberta, Canada). You can also now do an online course anytime and it gives you a 2 demerit reduction to put in your back pocket for when you need them.

I got 9 seat belt tickets from the same cop, hit a cop with a doughnut and see what that costs.....it's ugly. It's usually best to speed without your seat belt on and up here anyway they give you the seat belt fine instead of the speeding ticket. It's probably best not to listen to me..lmao

why can they not mind their friggin business?? I got the seat belt one within 10 days of last Christmas from a State azzwipe; wasnt speeding wasnt weaving didnt blow a stop, just driving minding MY own buz; what did I get "oh that's the CHEAPEST ticket the IL State Police issue" and "we have NO authority to "warn" on this offense, from the highest of the State pigs";/// WRONG-O; the cheapest tic they can issue is NO ticket at all; do pigs NOT issue "warnings" any more (not that I ever got one of those anyway) and why on ones they CHOOSE to write under "local ordinance" instead of under a "State Complaint" still have to be paid via the County instead of the local town?????? Who other than the cop and the guy pulled over HAVE TO know why there was a traffic stop? SUPPOSEDLY "local" tickets don't get reported to the Secretary of State; but being they still gotta go thur the County anyway I don't see that as possible; yes the State and all the local towns are "broke"; well you know what? SO AM I! so go pick on SOMEBODY else! ANYBODY!

I used to be a police officer, though I was usually "diplomatic" about writing citations. It's easy enough to tell the difference between someone who simply made a mistake and someone who was aware of what they were doing. Don't count on the officer not showing up in court, he probably gets paid extra to show up, and all of his tickets will get assigned to a particular date, so he won't have to make a special trip just for you.

Your best bet is to find a ticket attorney in your area. You won't end up paying any less money, but they'll get the judge fine you while withholding adjudication, which will mean no points on your license, and no bump in your insurance rates.

Be careful around school and construction zones, going too fast through one of those is simply begging for a ticket.

the last time I went "not guilty" on a 1st appearance, when they set me for "trial damn if the a** didn't show up; he never stirred for anyone else in the courtroom til they called MY name and he left after I was "done" in front of the judge. like that town can't find ANYTHING for that guy to do that day than spend $10 in taxpayer fuel and $35-40 in wages so the town can get its $25 of the toatal assessed fine outta me? Bull $#!t/.

yeah I tried that once; it cost me double what the ticket price was to the lawyer AND THEN STILL had to pay the freaking ticket on top of it!!! I will never waste the $$ on a lawyer for a traffic issue again.

OK mr Copper; 1) why do they add so much in additional "court costs" that have NOTHING to do with the operation of the Court, nor go towards anything having to do with why I'm there that day?
2) why does it NOT matter what the "defendant" says, there is NO "innocent til proven guilty; no its more like"Youre here, bend over and open your wallet; we do not care nor want to hear anything but "GUILTY and I can pay Today" because thats what you are ASSUMED to be by virtue of being here right now.

and 3) when I have a LEGAL DOCUMENT (that IS what a traffic ticklet is correct?) that says that "fines AND Costs are $75 for a given offense how the He!! can it be "right" for them to assess a "fine and costs" of TRIPLE that if you go to court amd not just "send it in"

You want me in tracffic school? fine. Supervision? fine. NO Supervision? fine again. But Dammit those are associated "costs" so DON'T think I won't get irate when you stick me for triple what is posted on that LEGAL DOCUMENT. does our Gov't NOT understand the concept of "truth in Advertising"? If I could go in and pay my LISTED $75 I would not get so damn irate but when they try and stick me for over $200 JUST because I went to Court (ticket does NOT say that it will cost any more if you do decide to pursue it that way) If I stuck you for triple face value when selling something I'd be arrested for theft embezzlement or something like that...... and people wonder why I have so much distatse for cops; they are basically a County revenue generation tool.

at least I can tell the 3rd or 4th kid that comes knocking asking if I wanna buy Girl Scout cookies I can tell them "sorry I already bought"; I cannot stand these "forced donations" they stick me with regardless of what I MIGHT (or might not) have done "wrong" that seat belt deal is another sore spot; if they tell me I HAVE TO use the damn thing when will I be arrested because my blue jeans either have holey knees or are too faded?

I'm no longer a cop, I'm a teacher, which is a position I much prefer. My life as a cop was a busy one, I rarely had time to hunt for traffic violators.

As for assessment fees added to traffic fines, you'll need to talk to your local politicians for that. The fees are an invisible tax which no one knows about until they have to pay it. The amount varies from place to place, in the city I worked, it was 85% of the fine, so if you got a $100 speeding ticket, the actual cost would be $185. The money goes to pay for various projects like playgrounds, drug rehab centers, or maintenance of public toilets.

If you think the extra assessments are unfair, you should talk to a lawyer about suing to have them overturned. This has happened successfully in some places.

On average, about 40,000 people die in traffic accidents in America each year, more than 1,000,000 are injured. The cost in medical care, lawsuits, lost work, etc. adds up to billions of dollars. Traffic laws exist for a reason, and if they are expensive, troublesome, or drive you nuts, perhaps you'll be more careful when driving. In some cases I agree that the punishment is not fair, but once bitten, twice shy, as they say.

If you like to drive fast, and not be too concerned about traffic tickets, do I like I did and become a police officer. "Professional Courtesy" is nice to have when you like muscle cars and such. I drove my '08 GTO from Orlando to Miami in 2 hours (more than 200 miles), a record which I later beat on my Yamaha R1. I didn't worry about getting a ticket, I was immune.

Here in Japan I only drive my Scwhinn Phantom, I don't think I've ever had it over 20 mph...

If you think cops in America aren't sympathetic, or that the traffic fines suck, you should see what it's like here (or in other countries). In Japan you aren't assumed innocent until proven guilty, and if you are arrested you can be held for weeks without being allowed make a phone call or talk to a lawyer. That's long enough for any bruises you get during "questioning" to heal. You can lose your license very easily, and getting a drivers license in Japan costs about the same in time and money as getting an aircraft pilots license in America (I should know, I have one).

I miss girl scout cookies....

Voleradon, it's not hard to imagine why you don't get warnings. Now I drive all my vehicals HARD and they are all fast and I've had exactly two speeding tickets in 40 years of driving. Why??? Because I keep my friggin' eyes open and I pick the place and time I speed. Try using your head instead of just your right foot. No sympathy from me for you, if your speeding is taking food out of your sons mouth who's in the wrong? Time to grow up dude.
