Courtney, a lot is going to depend on condition, colors, options and such. If you can post some pics, we can help you a little more, or even if someone here is close enough to look it over for you, we might be able to give you a firmer guess.
One good way to check it's value is to watch e-bay for a few weeks to see what VERY similar cars are selling for. They need to have the same type engine/tranny combo, be the same year (or 73/4) and be in about the same condition appearance and driveability wise.
You may be surprised at what it's worth.

Welcome to the site.
A picture is worth a thousand words (and a few of the car would be nice too)! What are the specs on it, color engine, overall condition etc.? Value is based on condition and desire, and the E-Bodies are pretty much at the top of the food chain if it's clean. Forget everything I just said, it's worthless and you should just give it to me to dispose of for you... LOL

Courtney,
Just be careful and don't sell off the car without understanding what you really have there. If it is generating that much local interest, be wary.
If you believe its valuable, then go here: http://www.galengovier.com/services.htm and get professional services. Galen does all kinds of decoding and can appraise the car too.
Just my advice there. Too bad you don't want to keep it, it's a neat piece of history and muscle. I wish I was so lucky.

'72 440+6 would definitely be a rare find! They didn't make any.

Fury,
Off topic: You've got a TR3? My mom had a red one with a black top, but I couldn't tell you the year; also had a dark blue TR7.
On topic: Wow, and everyone wonders why I can't stand most people. >_<

ok! I hope I wasn't to heavy handed, but GMDude, Challengergirl72 and 3 other accounts all with the same IP address and server info. have been banned by myself! No need for behavior like this. If I made a mistake and banned the wrong person (doubt it IP's are like finger prints) I'll gladly undo what I've done!
Off topic, the size of the grill is the only esay way to tell the year of a TR-3 or TR-3A, I also had a 72 MGB-gt with a rally engine, and a 77 Triumph Spitfire. My Fury is the first car I've rebuilt with something other than a 4-banger and a 4-speed!

Hmmm...my mom had a plethora of cool rides.
I know my folks almost bought a sublime Challenger they RENTED to drive to Long Beach, CA. Mom also owned a silver Chevy II Super Sport.
I'll see if I can find a couple pics of the Triumphs and send em to you, if you're interested.

I think you could still get a 440-6 barrel in 72 on a roadrunner. They dropped the hemi and the 6 barrel stayed around for one more year. In 72 the 440-4 barrel was only available on GTX's, I think. Not sure about 440-6 availability on other models (e.g. challenger) though.

According to http://www.challengerspecs.com/1972challenger.htm the 440 was not available in a 72 Challenger.
