OIL LEAK on the 440

I have a leak on the 440 and thinking it was the REAR MAIN SEAL and replacing it 2 times it still leaked, So 440 comes out of the car and and it all looks dry but their is oil where the cam shaft is, what am I missing or is their a gasket that goes their?

The car never leaked when it was off it was just when its running, And it was always a drip..

O.K. Now I feel like a real dumb person...I installed the 440 in the car and did NOT put on the freeze plug, So no matter how many times I changed out the rear main seal it was gonna leak..Is this the freeze plug

Yes...However most folks call it a rear cam plug.... Put a little Permatex #2 on it and install it.... Also if you did not put sealer on the 2 oil galley plug next to it. I would remove them and put some sealer on them also...

Now you got it fixed...

It did not gush out as much as I thought it should of, But I really felt like an idiot for the simple fact that we are at the point of time where I took pictures of every single thing as I tore it down, And after TVLynn told me about the plug..................I went back to the pictures and sure enough their it was...
Now is either one of 2 here good to put on the plug?

I would use permatex 2 not silcone on the plug and teflon sealer on the oil galley plugs ( screw in allen plugs) but have used ultra in a pinch...What was the oil pressure like it must of been low with the plug missing...Bill

I just search Permatex web site and it looks like they dont make permatex 2 any more, go figure..So I would put it in dry and maybe put a bead of ultra black around the outside rim of the plug on a clean surface...Bill

oil

Well the oil PSI never did drop that much from normal and the drip was not as much as you would think...After finding out that it was the cap that was missing I would have thought the same thing that it would have gushed out.....Friend of mine said he used the Ultra black on his 440,,,He said he just put some around the edge and tapped it in and let it set and never had a bit of problem.

Yeah, I swear by the ultra black. It goes on easy, stays pliable, and has never done me wrong.

Thanks Bill...I did not know they did not make it anymore.

I would just use thread sealer in that case on the inner edge of the plug.
The other stuff is Gasket Makers...
All you want is to make sure it dosent seep oil for a drip...

Silicone on any kind of plugs can make them pop out.. because the sealer does not set if it doesnt have air to set it ...I would use anaerobic sealer if anything
Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker - Permatex 51813 That is what this is made for...But you can use what you want after all it is your car...Dont let my 40 years experience influence you LOL....Bill

Yea the only thing good about gettin old is the knowledge you gain along the way i just turned 48 so im not all that old but i got my first mopar when i was 19 a 69 super bee.I spent alot of years in the auto parts bussiness so product info was something you dealt with everyday as well as being around alot of good mechanics. You can find indian head at alot of parts stores. Most of the old pull up stool at the counter parts houses are gone now its a shame. But auto zone they carry indian head its like $4.50 a bottle
