On a 440 does the oil squirt up the lifter up to the rocker arms or how does the oil get to the top of the valve cover?

 

Best picture I could find. You should see how the oil makes it's way to the camshaft journal then up through a passage to the rocker shaft. That journal is the one that needs to line up to pass oil through by turning engine at the crank.
