Agree... They had an spark advance lever and to start them you would advance the timing so they didnt kick back on the crank... But Im sure you will have some wierd explaination as always.Lol...Bill

the saying came from doctors at the time, if you started your ford and forgot to retard the spark before doing so, a lot of people suffered broken arms from the Ford engine kicking back while being cranked.

we got a winner!! pro-tech got it right. but you should retard the spark for starting. . i know the saying from the model "A". but it might be for the model "T" to.

And thats why I dont like Fords...There's a story that goes something like this.. Henry Ford assembly line stoped working and he called a guy to come fix it.. So the guy comes and fixed it in less than a half hour.. He handed a bill to Henry for $1000 dollars. Outraged Henry Ford said you were only her for 30 minutes so the guy said here let me fix that bill for you. He takes the bill and itemizes it
1) Bolt/Pin $ .20 2) Labor $ 4.00
3) Knowing whats wrong and how to fix it $995.80 For a total of $1000 Ford was angry but reluctantly Paid it... that is said to be a true story...Bill
