Is it possible to locate a car based on vin?

I know as a noob, it might be a dumb question, but i am searching for a 65 sport fury my dad once owned. It has been almost 40 years, but i figured this might be a good start.

It is vin # p456102954. I believe it was sold new in Jim thorpe PA and may have made its way to Calif.

Where would i begine to look to see if it still exists.

That's a tough one because of privacy laws. So unless you have a friendly Cop??
Also in Calif any vehicle not registered in 7 ? years records are purged from the system

I don't know what happened to the car after 1974. It could have been recycled or sitting in someones' garage. I have the original owners manual with the vin and a thermostate housing gasket.
