It could be a few different things, not enough fuel, not enough spark, not cranking over fast enough, electrical, etc.

I would have your starter tested if possible. If it is good, or even if you do have to replace it, run a wire from the negative post on your battery to one of the mounting bolts for the starter. This will allow the starter to turn over faster (as long as there is nothing mechanically wrong with the motor.

You may also want to check your spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor for corrosion build-up, and fuel filters to make sure that they are not clogged.

If the engine is cranking, probably not a starter issue, look into fuel or weak spark.

maybe it is just cold, where do you live? Battery does not like cold neither does oil. I made the mistake of buying a battery that is too small. It makes my slant six hard to start in winter.Guess I should get a Diehard.
An old choke coil that is getting weak could make it hard starting too.

It takes fuel, air and fire to make an engine run. The others have suggested the fuel and the fire, I would also suggest that you make sure the engine can breathe. For example, a clean air cleaner.

IT TAKES IT A WHILE FOR IT TO TURN OVER....is it a clicking noise....does the battery terminals get hot....check all the engine grounds....after you check everything and also take off and clean the battery terminals.....to check the battery cells.....take off all the caps....pull the coil wire and have someone crank over the engine....you look in the cells while cranking and if anyone of the cells has bubbles you have a bad cell/bad battery....do all of this and let us know how you made out

i think it's your starter, not that it's bad though. my Polara would always take a little while to turn over, try putting a newer starter on it. worked for a buddy of mine, but the started off my 77 pick up would start right up. so id just try a newer. but still check the other things mentioned above

IT TAKES IT A WHILE FOR IT TO TURN OVER.....how are spark plugs going to help if it takes a while to turn over.....first you have to take care of the electrical/battery/starter....

By "turn over" does he mean "crank" or "fire up"? I assumed he meant it cranks for a while before firing up, in which case a weak spark might be the culprit,it could also be old fuel, bad timing or a carb issue. Dirty A/F will contribute as will a poorly functioning choke. The list here is endless.Without the proper information, all we are doing is guessing. If it does not crank when the key is turned, that's a whole other issue with a whole other list of endless possibilities.

x2 We need clairfacation on what it is doing. Its hard enough to suggest a repair on the computer. The list of fixes could be very long.. And lead you down a wrong path and spend a lot of your money for nothing... JMO

Was the carb properly jetted and tuned? it might be flooding or starving for fuel.

you lost pressure between your fuel pump and carb or you just have a weak fuel pump or..... accelerator pump....or your carb is bleeding the gas out as it sits and thus there's nothing to pump in when you hit the key. There for, longer crank time. Check that out first and move on. One check is pump it before you hit the key, if no reaction, your carb is dry. Second, Do you have a electric fuel pump? or do you have a fuel cell not a tank? try taking the air cleaner off and pump the throttle linkage do you see gas squirt in?
I need more info!!

It's just a Mopar. Notoriously cold-blooded and hard cranking.

Admit it guys!

Sorry for the dumb question, but are you running a choke? If you have one, it could be set wrong. Let us know.

sorry havent gotten on in a while . um i think it has an electric choke, i have to double check. no i do not have a fuel cell, just a regular tank. i was thinking maybe i should get an ignition system put in but i think it has one, maybe too old? I did change out my plugs the other day thinking that might help the cause. The old ones where ridiculously dirty, but....... it didnt solve my problem. ill take a look at the fuel pump this weekend when i check the lift on my valve springs. did my taxes today so im about to put some more power in my engine, but i want to figure out the problem with the cranking that i have. and thanks alot for helping me, i really apreciate it
