To Straight pipe or not?

I know there's alot of mixed feelings on this topic, but I need to get some opinions from some people who have a little more experience on exhausts. Here's my setup so far.

Car:69 roadrunner
Engine:440 mag
Headers:none yet probably gonna go with 3" collector flowtechs
Exhaust system:http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/sh...le=&orig=17382
Flowmaster delta force

Most of my friends said I should go with straight pipes. The flowmasters already say "aggressive sound" but I want it to be as loud as possible but not so loud that I can't hear somebody in the passenger seat, if that makes sense lol. I could always just leave the mufflers off and switch in the pipe to replace it then put the mufflers back later on if I decided. What would you guys recommend, straights or no?

You've been watching too many episodes of "Orange County Choppers."

Open headers sound good in the right venue, IE in locales that "allow" open headers on the 4th of july.

Straight pipes sound like something that I cannot print here. The echo, they "rap," they just plain sound like a really bad smell.

I don't watch occ lol. But the loudest exhaust I ever heard was this guy on a chopper riding on the highway a few weeks ago, sounded like 2 helicopters having sex, I thought my ears were about to explode, so I can imagine how loud it was right under him. I'm just wondering exactly how loud the straights would be on this engine as oppose to the flows.

Night -

In my racing days, my 440 was set up with straight pipes into walker mufflers, ending just past the rear axles for the street. Once at the track, dropping the exhaust was no big deal. Now I have a full stainless steel exhaust. It looks and sounds better.

If you mean running "straight pipes" without mufflers, I think you're probably insane and are begging for every cop in town to write to a ticket.

For an engine to sound "GOOD", doesn't mean it has to sound "LOUD". IMHO anyway.

As stated above the open headers are going to be way to loud, but you are not talking that... EVERY mopar i have ever heard sounds like a rattle can with straight pipes to my ears... On the inside of car if exhaust is exiting completely out from under the car, conversation around town and driving easy probably be done, but it will still be a rattly sound... do yourself a favor and stick some sort of muffler on it... Course the exhaust sizing HAS increased so MUCH sense i've had one done and lots of the old rattly souding pipes have wained. now its mostly a deep drone which is as bad as far as i am concerned. Me Im old school, I like the old glass pack header muffler, then full exhaust to the rear... Some Flows are advertised as 'sound control' only no restrictions and those end up droning... use a muffler, your friends and your wallet will be happier. (keeps law enforcement from being behind you) I wouldnt use anything more aggressive than the series 50 Flows for street MHO of course... Cherry Bomb.... Disturbing the peace sense 1968...lol

How about a set of those slick electric cut-outs? Best of both worlds.

X2 on the cutouts,i have ran straight exhaust on one car from engine to rear bumper i hated it sounded like i was dragging empty steel trash cans around behind me. There are plenty of cars out there that have full exhaust and sound plenty mean.

I run straight pipes on my car-2 1/2" from the headers to 3" tailpipes over the axle and out the back, sounds unbelievable, loud yes, but it depends on what you want-if you want that car that at idle gets everyones attention then do it but it is a little noisy on the highway(depending on your gears) I love mine but I also dont drive mine daily-you can always put mufflers on if its to loud-rather to loud than be disappointed with it being to quite

My "new" '77 D150's whole exhaust system (from y-pipe to rear bumper) is completely one big pile of rust. I am definatly replacing it and, being a 23 yr old midwestern boy, I am going to straight pipe it. I love that rattleing trash can sound. I have had straight pipes on almost all my trucks (even my old '79 Aspen!) and I've never had a cop pull me over.
