the dart sports a pretty faded original paint job, the vinyl roof has some tears and is on its way to being completely shot. there is a very very limited budget with the car to get the brake system redone, new wiring, and other various other not that expensive parts.
i would love to paint the car with a good bc/cc but that isnt an option for quite some time. been reading about the $100 roller jobs and am seriously considering it. . from what ive read, the fisish is determined by the amount of time and attention to detail - i am a perfectionist when it come to my projects and the time isnt an issue as i have plenty. found some cool colors that resemble the 70's high impact palette. now should i sport the fade or do the cheapy chugger paint job? i wont be doing any sort of work until november when the heat breaks so...

Morrigan and I were talking about a clear coated flat finish for my chopper tank. How bout it? A flat black or dark gray, maybe a color, in flat covered in a flat or matte CC? Sounds very forgiving for any flaws. Check out some rat-rods for ideas. Just my 2 cents.

Don't roll it, it is going to look like crap and will all need to be sanded off anyway. The biggest part of a paint job is the prep. No matter how you paint it the prep is the same. Do all the prep yourself (if you roll it you gotta do it anyway) then take it to Maaco. they paint 20+ cars a day. It will look much better than a roller job.
If you can't afford to do it right you can't afford to own the car.

this is kind of an interesting subject. My friend has a body shop and yes it is expensive to do bodywork. While I was at the shop a week ago, I noticed an inner fender panel for a GTO that Kirk had just painted. I commented on how smooth it looked and how it had that just right satin finish. Then he tells me that it is "Imron" paint. "Imron makes a satin?" was my question. He said they just came out with it and it is about $75 a gallon. (not sure if that includes reducer or activator). Wow, imagine that, a flat/satin paint that is impervious to just about anything and wont let water seep in. My mind reeled with the possibilities where this stuff could be used. I think the only downside would be the fumes that Imron gives off while you are spraying it. Hey it might be worth a shot to look into it if you are thinking about a satin finish.

i painted my polara in primer to get it all one color, but its not worth all the hassel if your gonna get it repainted when your all done i'd stick with whats on it, personalyi like the "i'm fixing up my car myself" look =) makes me feel likei'm actualy doing something. plus i see it pointless to paint a car before you finish everything else so you dont stratch it

Thanx John, the 69 camaro pic has me rethinking things. But while we're on the subject, do any of you computer whiz's know of any programs that can take a picture of your car and change the colors, rims etc. for what ifs? I'd like to try that flat black look on my 74 Roadrunner.

I keep scrolling back to the flat black 69 camaro. It makes my pants get shorter! But I know a mopar would look better, perhaps a 68-70 Charger? Seems as the trick is to leave the factory chrome intact and not go for the total black-out look when using a flat.

I have seen a couple of roller jobs come out good. Have you thought about maybe spraying it? A gun is not that much. I went to a local paint store and for the single stage paint it would cost me ~$150. hen factor in the prep materials and time. I've got maybe $200 into just the outside body of mine.

im still leaning for satin black thought, have to find someone good at photoshop to see what it would look like

yeah, the black isnt grabbing as much since ive seen it on a 70. 39 years in the desert sun has given it a good even satiny fade, actually thinking of leaving it for a little while...

its faded bad, has a few small spots where the paint has given way to bare metal - but your question about straying away from the stock color got me thinking. i like the matte finish as well as the color the b5 evolved into - when the time comes to freshen the outside, thinking about color matching a spot and finishing the car in a nice uniform satin finish - even going as far as redoing the vinyl roof instead of painting it. even thinking about keeping the molding instead of a scat pack

I have actually done the roller job on my coronet. I can say it turned out great for the price (its a little more than $100). I say go for it, as long as you do it right and take you time it will look as good a a maaco job and heck maybe last longer than a cheapo spray job. The thing about spraying if you do it yourself is all the overspray and wasted paint in the air. In a roll job, you use 100% of the paint you buy. If you have ANY question about it, just ask. I learned a lot of little tips and tricks while doing this. If you look at my avatar, thats my ride all painted up with rusteoleum. Its been almost a year now and it still looks great. Very durable. If you happen to get a nick or scratch in the paint, you dont have to worry because touch ups are really easy and itll look good as new.
