trailer trouble.

my friend bought a trailer. but no title, no bill of sale. and cant find a serial number. but will be meeting to get the paper work. but we do know the name of the company that built it. there web site has a lot of info. not having worked around trailers for a long time i was learning all over again. i think its a #5000 or #6000 lb GVW. and the NET under #2000. but i think we are headed in the right direction.

Here is what I think I would do.....
Get the bill of sale....
Get a certified weight slip from a weight station...
Check in with whom ever does you Vin Tagging.. State or local Law Enforcement or DMV.. Ask to run for stolen, missing, or citations, Get a record to clear the unit.
If all check out well... New vin tag and registration and there good to go.
Some time you need a written affidavit to go with the selling of the vehicle.
But after that you should be good to go with a new title and plates with registration.

Just My 2 cents

ok thanks bob. what you listed should help a lot. iam sure that will work. i have also check out the lights. the tail and turn are in place. but the clearance and side markers are not. but found a great site that showed how to mount them.. if the new ones are LEDs that will be good. but will need better weather.

Sounds like your headed in the right direction....
Don't forget the Tornado weights....

Yes... Side Markers a must in my opinion... Amber mounted up on the front sides.
Reds on the rear mounted on both sides....
And also install the reflective red/white tape for when its parked and no lights are on.

"Don't forget the Tornado weights.." so would that be old bumpers or old brake discs? man the reflector tape is NOT cheap. W/M has plastic reflectors for cheap. Northern is not cheap. next stop H / F. am thinking of putting connections in a breakout box. connectors in the rain is not an idea i like. OR heat shrink tubing?

Connectors for what?...... Or are you looking for a Junction distribution block with weather tight?

I like these from Truck light....

yep that is a great J box. but looks expensive. but an other Q. what is the difference of a side marker and a clearance light? the wiring in the trailer is messed up. so iam sure ill have to make some connections. i have a very good crimping tool. and i think heat shirk tubing on crimped wire will be better than nothing.

In Cal you would have to have it inspected by the Highway Patrol for them to issue a vin tag for license.. Would have to meet current standards for lights..

That would be correct Lynn for our neck of the woods.. Also Cali Requires all lighting to be title 13 compliant...

Moe... Side Marker lights are down on the lower edge of the body. Amber Front and Red Rear.
Clearance lights are up on the upper edge of the body and also include front and rear lighting...

We use these for water tightness... http://www.lawsonproducts.com/lawson...AWG/KT13115.lp

Best tool ever for crimp butt and ring connectors.... http://www.lawsonproducts.com/lawson...0-AWG/90490.lp

And I don't use any Split ring connectors... I spec all full circle connectors. And I never use Scotch locks unless it is just to get back to the shop and then those get tossed in the trash... If I catch any of my guys using them, and leaving them installed, They get my Cowboy Boot in the Azz!!!! I HATE SCOTCH LOCK.

the crimper i have is a lot like the one you showed. but only cost $24.xx. i tested some crimps with mine and could not pull it apart. iam worried about water getting in. maybe liquid rubber? if the ring for the wire is split i put the split in the half moon on the tool. what i like is the LONG handles. but i dont do many car stuff any more.

That's the correct crimp in my opinion.... You can use shrink tube if you have to.... Just use a dab of silicone on the end that is exposed. that will seal that and keep it from corroding...

These work well also....http://www.specialized.net/Specializ...Type-2211.aspx

You should do more car work..... Good for the hand muscles....

Enjoyed this thread, it was like Mopar Trailer 101. Have a CHP friend who flips trailers. I did some welding on it for him and turned a 500$ trailer into a 1500$ trailer.

yep thats great tool. iam thinking of a frame to mount the crimper with a lever to put pressure on the stock handle. getting lots of force. a deb of silicone on a heat shrink tubing is good idea. but that project is in slow mode now. i still cant understand why a WHITE wire is used for ground on trailers.

i have seen that site. very good info. i have found tons of info on the internet. i am thinking that using the LED lights is a given. just knowing that you have two LEDs in each hosing is a big safety thing. . even better. but i will have to hold off till the weather gets better.
