This is a used dual snorkel ram air hood scoop in fair condition from a early 70s Dodge. It has several layers of paint on it. The paint is so thick that it chipped off at the base and I though it was damaged, but it was only the paint. I think there is a minor crack or two in the fiberglass, and I lost the mounting studs. I was going to restore it, get new studs and sell it for $250, but I found a set of wheels that I want to buy. You can do the restoring yourself and save. By request, I can strip the old paint, but I won’t come down on the price if I do that. I’ll take some pics and upload them in a couple of days.

Sorry I missed the posts: I forgot to subscribe to this thread. Yes, I still have the hood scoop.

Yes, it comes up from the hood for about an inch or so as single unit with a shallow groove that separates the two halves, then it splits into two separate units as it reaches forward into double wide flat ram air scoops which sit above the surface of the hood. The bottom halves of each snorkle are made from separate pieces that are held on by screws. (I lost one of the screws)
This is an OE unit with three factory part numbers.

I will have to dig it out of my storage building, clean the cob webs off of it and get a few pics. My schedule is just allowing me to do that right now, but things are changing at work. My hours are dropping from 84 hours per week to 66. It has been over a year since I laid eyes on it, but it is stored in a safe place. The main part of it that bolts to the hood is free of cracks if my memory is correct. That is from inspecting it from underneath because there are several layers of primer-paint-primer-paint, more paint, primer, paint--- you get the picture. It has been on an off of several cars sine it was made in 69 or 70. I am not familiar with the Dodge models of those years, but the guy I got it from took it off of his 70 Dodge (something that began with a ‘C’ I think--- ) in 1996 when he did a total resto of his old hot rod (that he had since he was 16) for car shows. I remember that he was replacing it because it had several layers of paint, was missing one screw where the two snorkel pieces bolt to the main unit, had a broken mounting stud, and it did have a small crack in one of those snorkel pieces where an attaching screw had been over torqued. If I remember correctly, the crack is not noticeable since it is on the underside of one snorkel. I will look at is closer when I dig it out and take detailed pictures. I do remember that the crack was cosmetic and not structural in nature, and that I had determined it could be easily fixed.

Studs: I took the studs off of it to position it on several different hoods while trying to find a car that it looked right with. I fitted it to two Eldorados, two Mustangs, a Tornado, a Cutlass, and a Trans Am. Needless to say, the scoop looked “way more cool” than my Eldorado did, and called so much attention to itself, that that is why it is not on the hood of “the Cadinator” you see pictured as my avatar. However, I put the studs in a storage locker and can’t find them right now. There was nothing special about them, and should be easily replaceable if I can’t find them. I think they were 1/4”. I know they had a coarse thread on one end and a machine thread on the other, and that I saw a package of studs that looked just like them last year in the hardware department at Lowe’s for $1.44

If I had a car that it looked right on, I would keep it. Its not perfect, but it is a rare and structurally sound O.E. scoop that can be restored to new like condition with a little paint stripper and TLC. If I had to restore it, myself, I’d be asking $250 for it, and marketing it to guys who want O.E. parts in their restoration.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted you know a little more about the scoop and its history. It is a rare and coveted part that I feel belongs on a Mopar because of the powerful, visual “I’m packin’ a Hemi” statement it makes.

It looks exactly like that.

I dug it out of storage and found four of the eight mounting studs. I took a lot of pictures and detailed the exact condition, but I do not have a way to upload them today. I will try to download the pics to my jump drive tonight so I can post them tomorrow. Do you know what kind of paint remover will get many layers of paint off of a part without hurting the fiberglass?

Here it is:



I have included pictures of the underside so that you can see how good the condition actually is. Some of the pictures from top side are somewhat deceptive because scratches in the paint and paint chips show some of the lower layers of paint that are red, black and grey. Some of these scratches and paint chips appear to be cracks, but are not. As you can see from the shots of the bottom side, no crack repair or hidden cracks are there. However, there is one crack that I did not remember, and I have photo detailed it for you.















The crack. It is located at the back corner of the scoop. As it is, it is easy to fix and cosmetic only. Resin or Gorilla Glue and some Bondo and 30 minutes labor will take care of it. At this time, the crack does not get into the stud mount, but I think if someone bolted this to a hood with the improper contour and over torqued it, it could extend to the mount and then it would be a structural issue. I have pried on the area with my hands to test the strength and flexibility. I can pry the crack open far enough to get some epoxy or resin into it without breaking it any more. If I had had some resin on hand, I would have fixed it last night. I had the Gorilla Glue, and it was tempting, but I did not know if that would have been an acceptable repair.







I was correct in remembering that the hood scoop was a 3 piece part. What I did not remember was that it was originally a 2 piece part. The inlets are joined by very thin fiberglass that separated sometime in the past. This was probably caused by the scoop base being mounted to a hood with a flatter contour. If that happens, it bows the top of the scoop downward and puts force on the scoop inlet bottom. This evedentally happened at sometime in the past and created two separate inlets. There is no structural issue at all here- both scoop inlet bottoms are held securely to its inlet top with 3 screws each- (I only have two of the screws). Before making this cosmetic repair, I would test fit the scoop to the hood. That way, if a slight gap between them results from a variation in hood contour, the gap can be filled with resin or Bondo before painting. If the repair is made and paint applied before bolt-on, then it is possible torquing it down would cause separation again. Then you are in for a crack fill and re-paint if you are building a show car. This would not be noticeable for a street driver. To check the fit on your hood, look at the middle of the front of the scoop where it meets with the center ridge of the hood. Any air gap that has to be closed by torque and flex, will stress the thin fiberglass bridge between the scoop bottoms. If you have a significant gap between the top ridge of the hood and the bottom of the hood scoop at center front, I would fill it instead of forcing the scoop to contour to the hood by torquing it down.














I have also included a picture of the O.E. Part number and the 4 mounting studs.





As I said before, there is a LOT of paint on this scoop, but beneath that is a quality part. 80% of its restoration will be in stripping the old paint.



I have a few more pics that show just how thick the paint is at the base of the scoop if you want to see them. Let me know what you think.

quick77rt may not care about stepping on someone else's sale, but I am not a product of the "me" generation. I have enough ethics to check with you first. I need to know soon, however.

If I was trying to step on your sale I would have by contacting the person directly, and listed the reasons why POS used parts dont belong on good quality cars not only because of the POS factor but the main factor concerns the UV qualities of the materials used in that time period.

So dont blame me if you had no sale.

Point made....he wanted a scoop with no cracks....like this one.

 

After checking with my potential buyer on this thread, who was still interested, but unable to buy my scoop. I sold it to another buyer for $175.00 plus $86.00 shipping to Canada. The buyers are happy with the part. Does anyone know how to cancel this thread?
