318 cylinder head question

Does any one know the rough combustion chamber size of 318 LA heads from 1967? are they smaller /larger than 63CC

if i were to purchase aluminum edelbrock cylinder heads with 63CC chambers, wouldn't that lower my compression thus negating the extra flow i would gain.

I have a 318 with KB flat top pistons said to bring compression to 9.6 to 1, and stock 318 cylinder heads with stock valves but am having a hard time finding out what the stock cylinder head combustion chamber size is.

Thanks for any info you all have

Luke

I've seen it published at 57-64, usually talked about as 63-65. My 70's looked tiny. From 57 up to 63 probably wouldn't change too much but check it out on a compression calculator, a gasket might make up the difference. I think the only way you'll find out for sure is to cc them, don't forget the older castings had differences from chamber to chamber in the same head, not the most accurate castings.

Flat top piston at zero deck? Or just a flat top piston how far in the hole?

You are correct with your thinking. The Eddy heads need a bump in CR over iron.

flat top at zero deck i am pretty sure .

My only worry is that i spend a ton of money on new heads and lose compression because of it.

I know everyone will say why spend the money on 318 get a real motor and you wont have an issue. But I like the bastard motors that everyone else throws away and it already makes a good healthy amount of power.

Thanks guys for the help the edelbrock heads have a 63cc chamber so hopefully it will be close to what i have already.

That is if i can convince the wife that we need to spend our tax return on new heads

You need the CR bump for the aluminum NOT for iron.

Nothing wrong with the 318. And I have had / seen plenty that are REAL motors any day of the week. And they can be built solid and dependable with good power.

The Eddy heads were built for the 340/360 market and since they fit the 318 block they work but werent designed for the 318 IMO.

for half the cost of Eddys you can buy reman magnum heads with light weight 8mm or 5/16 valves, get boneyard rockers from magnum motor, throw in AMC lifter in for the rocker oiling and measure for PR length, you are all set.

With the 59cc your CR using the mopar head gasket will be 9.5-10:1 if zero deck or a hair under.

Comp cam 270H-280H will put you at or past 350HP.

Do your homework and you will find this swap has been done numerous times with great success.
