A/C-Heater control problem in '71 Fury III
Well I'm slowing picking through all of the little projects on my recently acquired Fury III. I have a general question about the A/C-Heater control. My original Fury didn't have A/C, so it had a much simpler control unit in the dash. This new on has push buttons, none of which seem to work. They are all pushed in and don't really move any. Shouldn't these buttons be sticking out like the selector buttons on an old radio? There looks to be tubing running to the back, so does this unit run off of vacuum? I figured the A/C wouldn't work with the car having sat for 13 years, but I don't understand why the heat and fan doesn't work. I have the chance to pick up a replacement control unit, but don't want to spend the money needlessly if it's just a problem with the tubes running to the back of the control. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

hey fury, yes the controler runns on vacume, however the buttons should all be out, there are ceramic plates that fit together in the housing of the control unit and when you push the buttons in it moves the ceramic plates which activate the vacume pull for each button to operate the doord on the h-vac case. what happens over time is the rivetes holding thees individual plates together seperate causing the plates to drop to the bottom of the housing, then when you push a button they all drop and all the button go in, then the unit isnt any good. I dont know of anybody repopingthem or who offers a rebuild service for them. Id say get anotehr unit off a doner car, most of the c-bodies used the same control unit style. good luck.
