Replacement Starter
Does anybody know what vehicles specifically come with starters like this;
I have been cross referencing part numbers on various websites.. and it appears that this type of starter can come for anything from the 3.5L to the 5.9L.. but they can also come with replacements that look completely different, like this;
Now the bolt holes look like the line up properly and the solenoid looks like it has the same lugs for use with power and exciter wires... would this type of starter work too? Are there any kinda that do not have a solenoid on them?
If I can get one off a late model Mopar such as a Dodge van or Dakota 6cyl I will be going to the yard Thursday to pull one off of said vehicles I really need to get it running before I start messing with other things.. no point if it doesn't run right lol. Got one good spin out of the old starter.. sputtered for 5-6 seconds but i couldn't stay to give it throttle.. it was blowing all the crap trapped in the fan shroud around lol.
Can I grab a starter off a 3.5 v6 and hope to turn my 360?
THANKS ALOT GUYS

Old starter left weighing in at a hefty ~20lbs... Ne starter (2001 dodge dakota 318.. ~100k kms) weighing in at a mere ~10lbs.. much LIGHTER!!
However same problem persists.. the wires got pretty hot.. which means the energy is being lost to HEAT.. New wires no biggy prob needs a new starter anyhow.
I hope wires solves the prob. Bolted right up too i was happy!

congrats! But dont worry too much about the temp of the wires within reason. Wires are rated in centigrade for current capacity and insulation protection, i.e. 75 and 90 deg c are very common. I dont have a conversion in front of me, but 75deg c is around 225f. One size up from factory would be good, 2-3 sizes if you mount the battery in the trunk.

well what else would explain why the wires are getting to the point of melting? HUGE resistance. I understand fully where your comming from Scott, when your pushing that much power through a little wire the voltage drop is to be expected, and some heat will be displaced.. I think a good charge on the battery, and some new wires and terminals and it should make matters alot better.
Now i gotta take the damn starter back out again! LOL.. OH well all in good fun eh!?
thanks alot guys

75C = 167F.. Crazy Americans lol
When I put the lug back on the new starter it was pretty corroded looking.. but i figured what the hell at the time. lol
Like this was to the point of melting the sheathing.. and when a big wire gets resistance.. the energy that was supposed to get the starter turning was now converted and lost to heat. I figure a wire and terminal change will liven things up.

Thank you, I have now been "skooled"! All I know about metrics is the song the sang in the Schoolhouse Rock thing during cartoons. But I am all set with Conjunction Junction!

Damn you Scottie! Now that song will be going thru my head the rest of the day... "Conjunction Junction, what's your function...."
Nother thing on those starters, I bought one to use on my '71, and the header pipe wouldn't clear the solenoid. I know it's a smaller starter, but look at the pics, and it's actually farther out than on the old big ones.

lol you think conj. junc. bad bucc, try this 1, my 12 year old comes home from the music store bout a month ago. its kiss love gun. which Im not that fond of, I grew up wen they were hot, and didnt care much for them. ( a motor head fan) what can i say i love Lemme. anywho, when he hit shock me, that F**k`n song has staid in my head for the last month now.Ill start doin somthin and dododo dodo dodiddodo. cmon n shock me.. Oh My G ahhhhhhh. So I tell a buddy, he starts laughin at me. so every now n again I send him a text. cmon n shock me. lol he sends back, wheres the love, that is so wrong. on the starters. yes the wiring isnt long enough you need to lengthen the ends. so they dont hit the exhaust.alot of it on the heat is the voltsge, your like overloading it, its sending more juice to it for the gear reduction, so the selonoid cant handle it. theese starters dont need the extra juice to kick them over. something the tech boys dont tell you on the hop up conversion articles.

Update
Took the starter back out, put in all new wires from the battery to the starter, battery to the block, and starter relay to the starter as well. Tried my same methods of starting.. Still nothing! But then I had an anomaly! I take a look at my charger/starter and its only rated for like 260A starting power.. so im like "you gotta be kidding me!" *smacks forehead* SO i get a charged battery hook it up, along with the starter/charger.. *biiim biiim biim biim* Car turns over like a brand new 4cyl, with ease. Wouldn't run unless i fed it gas from a spray bottle, mustn't be pulling from the tank. Topped her off with some oil, and she was purring
The car is sitting on maybe like a 15* slope with the front end up on blocks.. and i put around 10-13L or so in the tank but the gauge ain't reading a thing.. The tank isn't leaking, and the lines look OK from the outside ( i know they could be clogged real bad ). Dunno how i can really diagnose this one.. if the car isn't running i cant really move it lol to get it on level ground. Is the fuel pickup in the front of the tank?
