My son & I are building a 1954 Studebaker Champion with a Plymouth 383 c.i. engine from a 66 Belvedere. My question is concerning the starter and do I need an external soleniod and relay switch.

Is there a better way to do this?

You need it. Even the high torque/low weight smaller starters use them.
