Brake Spring
Yes, it wraps around the outside of the drum on the front drums only. It connects to itself, one loop around the outside of the drum. It has always been on the car, both front drums. I am the second owner since 73. Always wondered what it was for.

Brake Spring
I would not have thought that either. The new drums did not come with the outer spring, so I used the old springs . Don't know how much longer they are going to last they are 28+ years old. If they break is it necessary to replace the spring or forget about it ?

If you got the new drums from auto zone, theyre the china pcs. that mopar muscle mag was talking about a few yeasr back. they are junk, they have a bad habit of getting hot due to the thin walls of the drum sides, and they arent perfectly round, they have an oval shape to them causing them to over heat and then warp after a short life cycle. then you cant turn them due to the thin layer of lining. I had a pair. ended up paying twice the price for new napa , made n usa pcs. just be carefull. they have a real bad brake fade to them as well from over heating.

that spring is there alot of the time for when the person is turning them at a shop. What is does is absorbs the vibration waves so the cutting tool leaves a nice smooth surface, if its not there while they turn the drum it will leave a rough surface
