What is the car?

Couple things for you to look at:

Make sure that you are getting fuel to the carb. Pull the line after the pump and turn the car over and see of gas come out (put a can or something st the end to catch the fuel). If it comes out then you could have a clogged filter between the pump and carb.

Follow the fuel line from the tank to the engine looking for leaks.

Make sure you have gas in the tank, you can't always trust the gas gauge (I learned that the hard way).

With the lines all hooked up, remove the air cleaner and see if gas squirts out of the jets when you open the throttle.

These are just some things that you can look at first. Let us know what you find and we will try to help you out some more.

Ya what Tim said, but I have one question, when the car is running can you smell gas coming from anywhere?

Actually, if you turn it over for about 15 seconds, that would be more than enough time for a leak to be seen, as long as the pump is working. If the pump is working then you would be able to see gas on the ground around where it is leaking from.

Maybe. Disconnect the fuel line after the pump and turn the motor over while the line is run into a milk jug or something to catch the fluid. If the pump is working, then you should see fuel in the jug. If there is no fuel, then either the pump is bad, you have a leak that the pump can not overcome (that would have to be a pretty big leak), or there is a clog in the line before the pump.

Where is the fuel filter, is it before the pump? Could be in backwards or clogged.

The filter should be after the pump. There should be one either in the tank ot between the tank and pump as well, but not always.

If you can't see/smell gas you may have a float sticking or a sunk float, ie: hole in it, check float and just give the side of the carb a gentle rap with a tapometer or check for our old friend the vacuum leak.

The backfiring is a timing issue. Also go through carefully and make sure that each spark plug wire is on the cap in the right order and going to the right cylinder. I know that if you coss 4 and 7 ( i think) the motor will still run but not well. After you have made sure the wires are in the proper order, go ahead and mess with the timing. You may also need to adjust the mixture screws on the carb as well, but get th timing to where it should be first and go from there.

Glad to hear that its running for ya and stops on a dime.
