mopar purple solid .557 / 292* cam or not.

I already have the Mopar .557 lift / 252 @ .050 in my assembled short motor. I'm finally getting this engine of mine finished off & am going over everything. I'm copping a bit of crap about my old Mopar grind from some mates that have solid rollers. It has me thinking a bit about it. I just got of the comp cams & lunatic sites but I still think the old Mopar grind is still OK & I already have installed it. Just getting last minute jitters I think. My specs are 3300 lbs ish. 3.9 8/4. Full manual reverse pattern 727 3500 stall . 383 cid , race prepped, 10.7:1 comp, 3" madrel bend exhaust & custom headers, 75cc Indy ez 440 heads ( getting flowed with ported holley street dominator inlet ) & 750 dp holley & 3" carb spacer . mad dizzy & 6 al , hemi dart hood scoop. My goal is mid 11 sec street car . any suggestions ? Should I change cam ( I have 1.6 rockers ) ? I know a solid roller would be great but would I be best spending money elsewhere like bogging & porting heads , new manifold, to work with what I got now? I think I'm thinking to much but just want it to be right. & old mate doing my head work is quite back logged & I won't know anything for quite awhile.?

Sounds good ! I would put some lighter springs on to break in the cam, use lots of zinc additive. run it for for 20 minutes at 2500 RPM to break it in...

Engine sounds like will be a nice street/strip car . I would look into alil more duration on the cam to take alil more advantage of that stall and gear.

What lsa is the cam?

Very powerful cam. With the 1.6 is it actually .594" or the .557" stated?

Sounds real good but the manifold might hold the engine back, easy to change later.

I agree strongly about the break-in springs, I do it on mine now.

Big oil pan and windage tray would be good.

Piston to valve clearance

Isn't this much duration and lift for a 383 coming close to the limits of the available piston to valve clearance ?

1 valve lift including 1.6 rockers then minus lash = in 566/ ex 562 i may get away with running .002-3 tighter , but that lash is in the grind & it's best not to mess with it.
2 i have a DEEEP 7qt pan & windage tray with extra drain slots & my sump is down at the mopar guys work shop now getting sorted with external oil pick up. i'm hopefully getting a 2nd hand 2 oil pick up set up, for extra hard revving. for 2nd upgrade down the track. i'm also using a remote oil filter & maybe a oil cooler , so i'll have a bit of extra oil in the lines aswell.
3 the heads are comming back from old mate prepped with inner springs out for braking in.
4 there's plenty enough piston to valve clearence as well as my block. it has been deshrouded to except the large indy valves & to flow around them.
5 as for the manifold the old street dominator holds it's own quite well. & using a 2" carb spacer & a 1" adapter plate that increeses plenum volume quite alot. BUT after reading about making big gains of power by increesing plenum volume buy porting out inlet manifolds. i really ripped into mine heeaps. thats why i'm taking my heads & manifold down to the mopar guys this weekend. old mate likes the eddy victor manifolds so if it's going to be cheaper to buy a victor thats what i'll do. i have quite a few photos on my profile album & yous should be able to see my sump hanging way down there. gota fly.
6 btw is a 1/2" fuel line to much of a weight coloum under acceleration for a carter hivol machanical fuel pump? cause that what i'm using. i do have a rear drop sump welded to my fuel tank to help push the fuel also.

back to my engine the only real gain i see with the newer cams is about .013" - .017" of extra lift due to a tighter lash. the next jump up in cam size i'd need more compression & convertor.
that's where a solid roller comes into play it will allow me to have the same or less duration but .620" of lift or there abouts. BUT thats at a cost of $800 including shipping to OZ. but i have to draw the line somewhere. & 11.5 @ 114+mph will do me nicely & then i may inprove on that with car mods that need to be done anyways. i'm aiming at 380 @ the tires hopefully 500 engine hp. using the speed calculators there saying my weight & 490hp should put me into the 10's. but i'm just your average joe & don't have golden fingers . cheers.

I took the heads down to the Mopar dudes today. & it looks like the eddy victor inlet manifold is the way to go for sure. There still going to flow mine just to show me how much better they are. & there thinking I may not need to putty up the Indy ports, in fact open the top of the inlet port up to max wedge port height but not width. The guy who's making my exhaust was around tonight & by the sounds of it there going to be very hitech headers ( tri why's ). He seems to think the exhaust makes or brakes the engine. Going back down on Sunday to talk to boys & find out a bit more. Have a great weekend all.
