Question about 68 Charger

I have a 68 Charger. It has a 440 in it. It was originally a 383 car. When someone says all matching #'s does that mean the engine has a code on it that matches the car or does that just mean it's a 68 motor that is stamped to have been in a certain car?
I am debating on swapping the 440 back to a 383. Thouts on if that's a good or bad idea are appreciated as well.

"Matching numbers" should technically have been the motor/trans ect that came with the car. VIN sequence isn't on the motor though. So its usually done by the casting date of the block.

The transmission bellhousing should have the VIN sequence stamped if its an auto, not sure on a manual

So as LonG as I can find a 1968 383 motor from a charger 'which Will probably be an impossible task' it would bring the car back to near original?

if you find any 1968 383 block, then you can say date code correct
remember though, if the car is a 68, originally, the original block's casting date would have been in 66 or 67

Thanks for that info. The likeliness of me finding one is probably very slim I would assume huh? Any good sites for finding an old engine like that you may know of?
