is there a brake pedal spring?

1970 340 cuda. the resting position of the brake pedal makes the brake light come on. if i pull the brake pedal up, the brake light goes off. this just happened. it didn't used to be this way. i believe the pedal stayed up and the brake light was off and it came on only when you applied the brakes like normal.

I don't know about a spring but I believe the switch on the pedal can be adjusted. Hope this helps.

No spring, the brake fluid is the spring... When you push the pedal it pushes the fluid in the line and thats what compresses the brake pads.

Whats the problem

the problem is that the brake pedal does not stay up. the way it currently rests, the brake light comes on. in other words, the brake light is always on.

try adjusting the switch. or replacing it. it may have slid in its mount so it isn't making contact with the pedal to shut off the lights.
