Hi All,

I was wondering what the general consensus is on boring a block, should I pay the extra $140(total $370) with torque plate? Or without for $230?

With torque plate. I'm surprised you even get that option. All my machine shops use a torque plate without asking.

 

I would steer clear of that shop..All Mopar shops know that you only bore and hone with the torque plate bolted down. There should not be a cost differance like that.

Agreed. Most all engines, especially mopars need a torque plate when honing or boring.

 

Kinda scratching my head. Any "worth-its-salt" shop uses torque plates these days. Maybe they dont have Mopar ones, and want you to help finance their first set! Torque-plates are just S.O.P. around here!

 

I Don't want to bad mouth any shops so I won't name that one, but they told me a while back that they specialize in Mopars and have been operating for 30 years.

I also called another popular place in the city and asked for pricing on a bore job, he quoted me about a hundred bucks cheaper and when I casually mentioned a torque plate he also said "oh that it will be an extra $120". I guess its not as common up here in the great white north. I'm glad I did my homework though, I'll pay for the plates to get attached, although for an extra 15 mins work its pretty steep. Sat in with a machinist back in the day to learn what goes into doing blocks RIGHT. Used to do some demo derby and killed a bunch of blocks. I am NO machinist but here is my ten cents worth:

When we expected the motor to last short term we never used the PLATE. Was an expense we couldn't swing. And we killed a lot of blocks. Still don't if we are getting the kids into the 1/4 miles game with rebuilt stuff. Or if its a mudder or crawler that gets 25 miles a week.

If its going back on the street and I was doing the motor for a myself its getting torque plated.

If you dont use the PLATE at least make sure your machinist bores in alternating patterns from drivers to passenger side to keep heat distortion down.
