will a 400 big block work in a 63 chrysler 300?

i have a 400 big block out of a 73-76 dodge pickup and i was wondering if anyone knows if it will bolt in my 1963 chrysler 300 with no problems... the car originally had a 383 big block in it. thanks

They are basically the same engine so You should have no problems

oh alright awesome thanks i appreciate it

Should bolt right up EXCEPT I'm not sure of the balance issues between the two engines. I'm pretty sure a 400 is "externally balanced" so must have it's own balancer, but I'm not sure if the torque converter has balance weights on it, or not

the Intake is not as wide on the 400 and the distributor shaft is shorter. If you get those with the 400 it should not be a problem. And yes the 400 is externally ballanced and I do believe the converter should be changed.

You might need to change oil pans, most cars have a center hump while trucks use a front hump. TVLynn is right they are about the same, the 400 has a larger bore with the same 3.75 stroke.

john, have fun take some pics and post!

383 & 400 use the same intake and distributor size.. 413/440 is different

The 383 is internaly balanced and the 400 is externaly balanced so keep the harmonic balance and the tork converter that comes with the 400, although B&M makes a flex plate that will let you use a internaly balanced converter on an externaly balanced motor
