1969 Road Runner 440 6 Pack Stutter Issues

Hey guys so I bought a 1969 Road Runner with a 440 6 pack at mecum the other day and I have an issue. It fires up great and idles perfect but if I give it a lot of throttle in gear driving along under a load it stutters and is hessitant. If it's in neutral and I stomp the gas it doesn't hesitate at all revs up and comes back down nice and smooth. If I give it gas slowly while moving in gear it seems to not stutter. I have only driven it around the parking lot and then loaded it in my trailer but I'm just looking where to start. You guys here seem to know your stuff so any help would be great! Thanks in advance!

Clutch adjustment or it might be time for a new pressure plate and disc with a flywheel resurfacing.

So you think it's the clutch?!? I feel like it would be more of a fuel / carbutetor problem. Maybe they need to be synced? How do I go about adjusting the clutch?

And; check the accelerator pump function
check the timing for maximum 35 degrees at 2000 rpm

How can I check the accelerator pump function? What should my initial timing be set at at an idle? Should I plug off the vacuum advance when checking? I'm a chevy guy and mopars are new to me!

Matthew

With the engine shut off, look down the center carb and pump the throttle to see if gas exits the accelerator pump nozzle into the carb.

Idle timing is insignificant.

Plug the vacuum line to the distributor and check timing at 2000 rpm. As a baseline, the timing should be minimum 35 degrees and not exceed 35 degrees above 2000 rpm.

Great! Thank you very much! Now if all this checks out what do you think my next step should be? If I don't see a squirt of fuel from the accelerator pump what should I do? Is there an accelerator pump only in the middle carb?

I agree, it's most likely an accelerator pump issue, (though the corner idle screw adjustment is suspect too). If the six-pack setup is the stock piece then yes only the center carb has an accelerator pump. The ignition timing is also suspect, get a dial back timing light and do the basics.

Great! I'll start with the basics and let you guys know what happens! Should be a couple days before I can get time to attack it!

Checking for a suspect coil would also be a point of interest. You should be able to get the spark to jump a good 1/2 inch to ground.
