340 motor question

I was In the process of buying a 69 340 that was running. When the guy was taking the transmission off from the engine he said that he broke off I guess what I think you call the ear where one of the transmission bolts to the engine on the passenger side. The guy says its not a big deal and can be welded back. Is the engine worth buying now ? I know it doesn't have to do with the engine working or not but I assume it hurts the value of the engine.

thanks

Not a big deal? It is to ME. The reason it broke is because he's a "big hammer" mechanic. I see stuff like this as the "tip of the earberg" as it were. If he's so careless and hammer happy that he broke THAT what about the stuff you can NOT see?

That’s a good point. I might take a picture of the damaged area and take it to local guys to ask around. if they all say it’s no biggie, then maybe it isn’t. tough to pass on a 340 but if it’s literally broken...

I would pass !!! IT is a very difficult repair. I'm no expert. From what I know you would need to disassemble the engine !! Then heat the block in an oven to a high temp, then do the repair. Then slowly cool it overnight NOT cheap.. You don't just pick up a welder and fix it.
Talk to someone who does cyl head repair

What a Dick... To bad that was a good year for 340s..He probably took all the bolts out and let it hang on the one bolt that broke. OR like 440 said he used a BFH and started whaling on it and broke it either way broke is broke.. If it is "NO BIG DEAL" then he will take scrap price for it or $100 I bet it becomes a big deal real quick...Bill

Where's it at? I'll buy it & weld that ear back on!

I've done it a bunch & NO you don't have to disassemble & oven heat for that area there for the fix
Preheat with a torch & weld with a Nickle/Cadium rod

Been doing it that way for 35+ years

give him $50. buks as a down payment based on you get it fixed good. also be sure it still has the 2 dowel pins are there. if missing some tooling dowel pins 1/2 inch dia should work. if the dowel pin holes are unfixable DONT BUY it

Take a picture of it if you could. It can be repaired but its a pain to do. When you say the corner do u mean the corner in the pic here? (http://image.moparmusclemagazine.com..._340_block.jpg)

Yes it is, but I left out a word. It starts with "F" ends with "ING" and there's a big smell in between

my youngest son would be a ""big hammer" mechanic". he can brake a rock with a rubber hammer. but he knows he is NOT a mech.
