383 build

Ok we have had this 383 in out barn for probably 10 years and I finally talked my dad into letting me build it. We have no history on the motor it just came with my dads coronet. I took a few pictures so y'all could help me identify exactly what I have. I'm shooting for around 450 hp. I need all the help I can get. What would be a good cam? I want it to sound kind of lumpy at idle, but this will be a street car. Should I use these heads and what should I have done to them. Do you think it needs bored out? The ridge is just barely there. Any other information you have will be much appreciated. I'm only 18 and this will be my first build.

from the surface rust in the cylinder yes it will need to be bored & new pistons fitted
the heads are nothing special , just normal 71 heads , with large valves , but they will work , try to get into the 9.6 : 1 compression range
I would look @ the Lunati VooDoo series cams

How much does it cost to have it bored? And how much should I get it bored? What pistons do you recommend? And one last question what could I do to help my heads? Thanks for all the help

If you hone it & re ring without boring you will end up with an oil burner. Boring and pistons ? maybe $1000-1200.. add another $300 if boring with a torque plate For parts and machine work (hot tank & new cam bearings, machine rods & fit to pistons) . another $500 (depends on what shape they are in) for the heads. Maybe $250 to regrind the crank Just bore enough to clean up the bores .020 0r .030. $300 cam kit, Another $500 for misc supplies- gaskets, bearings and such. just figure $3000 minimum.. Prices for machine work varies depending on area for a GOOD rebuild cost is subject to change. It all adds up

when chrysler built a hi performance car it wasnt just a cam and carb. it is whole system. try to find an old racing book by chrysler. if you do everything that chrysler says you will be ok.

You should be able to deliver it to a mech shop and get it rebuilt back to factory spec.s for 15-2000 but if you want upgraded parts I would get a book as stated above and do some home work then buy the parts and then bring it to the shop for them to mech.and assemble it keep in mind you should have someone check the motor for cracks and bore size before you spend money on parts . Take it to a motor shop have it cleaned and magnet tested to make sure your good to go good luck !!

Not sure why someone started to post on an old thread but I'm curious why there is no picture of the ident pad passenger side of motor beside the head posted.
