Building a 392

Ok guys just looking for some suggestions on do's and DO NOT's I am planing on building it up. Do not want stock h.p. I would like to see 600 + HP . I know guy always say 6 + but that is my goal as I do have the time to stock up parts while I prepare the car . So that said I spoke with my shop a little about the heads as to should I buy AL. Or build the originals . He told me the originals will be fine . Not sure if I like sinking a pile of $$$$$ into old cast heads what do you guys think ? Next we spoke about 4 bolt main caps and he said no need ?? I have read a lot of info (to much ) and just don't want to sink all this in and skimp on thing that at this stage is penny's relative to breaking it and then starting over . My shop has been building mopars since the late 70's but has not done a hemi in many years . I trust his opinion as he has built some silly 440's and my sbc 383 stroker. Just don't want to buy another 392 and start over after a bad judgement call !!!! Not a $500 sbc thanks guys !

I was going to build a 392 stroker non hemi but due to recent machining problems (i messed up boring) its a 396 stroker. I am not making it a high horsepower motor im looking to be around 500 but if you plan on going over that would most want to do four bolt mains. It's only a little extra money but well worth it and its better to be safe then sorry. Aluminum heads are nice mainly for the weight reduction. You can get the some power out of the stock cast heads and the same machining can be done on both pretty much. However, on my A block heads I don't have much adjustment with my valves for bigger cams so if you have the same problem on your hemi heads then i am pretty sure you would be better off buying the aluminum heads because of the adjustable valve train. you can buy just the valve train for the cast heads but it is some serious money. I zero decked my block and the key to horsepower and torque is semetry. making everything as close to being the same on both sides. you should have no problem getting the high horses out of that motor as long as you do it right. Hope this helps

to build a 92 now days is very costly. in 1968 i built a 92 and put it in a 59 ply wagon. do NOT take it to shop that dosent do early hemis. the hemis are a different breed of cat. the week spots are 1. an aluminum TQ flite will not bolt up. 2. the stock oil filter is a little oddball. but good adpters can be had. i made mine with long hoses, i still have them. 3. to get 600 hp with carbs will be tuff. i only ran the stock 4 bbl manifold withe a Pontiac 4 bbl carb. i had the manifold bores opened up to fit the Pontiac carb. i have never ran blowers so i cant help with that. but that would be an easy way to get 600 hp. and not run to big of a cam. OH yea i have a factory chrysler servuce manual, 1957 new yourker IE. covers the 392 hemi.
